Defenitely (pop) punk (just listen to the riffing, it's punk as ****), but starts to suck after American Idiot. Their early stuff reminds me of pop punk like screeching weasel or teenage bottlerocket.

See, I always thought of Green Days early stuff as punk but with a more refined sound. Or maybe that's just what pop punk is.

They're are a pop punk band, hence their top 40 appeal that launched punk into the mainstream so it could become commercialized and made safe.

See I'd agree with that, accept that they were the band that set the stage for pop punks emergence. I don't think them being top 40 automatically means they're pop punk. I think as releases go on and they start to incorporate alternative into their sound they kind of become a pop punk band.

Well, when they came up the pipeline everyone thought as them as pop punk, and the media labelled them as pop punk at the time, they definitely weren't trying to be the Circle Jerks. Obviously their sound progressed as they got older.
