How many albums did they listen to though? I only need an estimate.

I know the DIY and amateuristic thing IS a Punk thing, that's why I said ''still has going on'', you don't need to clarify it. I mean, the amateurism is even in the name. But Punk Rock definitely has a general sound, often with very similar riffing. Hardcore Punk has a sound. Skate Punk has a sound, etc. That those early bands sound different (I think at least, I wasn't there) has more to do with that the genre wasn't fully established yet. I mean, Talking Heads were considered as Punk as the Ramones, despite sounding completely different. What you're doing is almost (It's not the exact same) like saying Powerviolence has no specific sound because Man is the Bastard sounds nothing like Charles Bronson. I got to admit I quickly wrote that and have never listened to television, but I tink the Ramomed and the Damned have quite a bit in common, at least their early work, which admittedly is their only work I actually listen to. But I just heavily disagree punk doesn't have sounds, it has them just like metal. In fact, if there's one genre with a bajillion bands that sound the same, it's Punk.

I don't know enough about post-punk to comment on that.
But punk definitely has a sound. I don't think it's an attitude. I mean, you could match that same attitude to some metal bands and rock bands. Godsmack did a bit of the DIY in their early days. Would you call the early Godsmack stuff punk? I wouldn't. And if you said they are, I'd say your ****ing dumb for claiming they are. Punk rock is without a doubt a sound. To claim it's not is absurd to be frank. |
