Just the attitude of the music, and the lifestyle the band lives.

okay, real punk was grittier, harder more agnsty, and had better and in general more political lyrics. Punk revival isn't as gritty or as harsh as real punk music was. Plus, they hane softer, ****tier lyrics. Pop punk is hell of alot more softer, more controlled, less political, more pop orientated for the mainstream market..Hope that clear sit up for you..

Why even start these threads? All that happens is a bunch of peolpe come around and tell you what punk is because they know and everyone else is a poser. Most the time they have no idea what there talking about, its just dumb. I suggest you figure it out for yourself instead of listening to people telling you what is and isnt punk. ISnt anyone else sick of sitting around thinking about all these stupid people writing up the "rule book" for punk? The only thing that make me happy about this thread is the fact that most of the people who reply to it will probobly not be involved in the punk scene in ten years, hell probobly even ten months.

Punk is playing music with passion even though you mightn't have any technical skill at all. Check out the Swell Maps and Half Japanese to see what punk is really about.

deadkennedysmeetstheclash, don't you listen to modern punk? You say its gone softer, whats with that? Alot of the punk today are possibly more grittier, harder and more outspoken than ever before, they just don't get as much coverage. Just shut up with your crappy theroies of "punk revival". Punk never went anywhere.

I think generalizing music is stupid all in all. Everyone has they’re own opinion to what genre a band falls into. What I think is punk the guy next to me is gonna think is crap and what he thinks is punk I’m gonna think is a bunch of idiots yelling about stuff they think is rebellious. But since you’re asking for people’s opinions ill voice mine.

Punk started out as something that the normal person didn’t want to hear, had lyrics that actually meant something, and was more of a way to express themselves than to just play music. Take Crass as an example, a band I believe started a new string of punk, they weren’t leftist liberals or crazy republicans they were themselves and didn’t say something just because they thought it was rebellious. But if you had some one listen to crass they'll think "who the f*ck are these people, they dont even know how to play music". If you don’t agree with this I love a good debate and I won’t take it offensively.

Came out kinda long sorry.
