How did this strumming pattern+tempo become so prevalent in modern punk?
In modern punk and pop punk, from the nineties to now, I hear this strumming pattern A LOT. Here's some examples of what I'm talking about:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARK3hihYkBg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoffsBtvzl8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHZHh6xr2Gc (0:09) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjKA8f30Fxg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6axOY4PBusk (0:14) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4u7slnRZe4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTbCotej3Js (0:09) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tersmvh6fFI (0:43, the chorus only) You get the idea. It also always has that same type of drum/tempo in it. Speaking of which, that drum itself is even more prevalent in modern punk. Somehow it makes me want to move my head to the guitar pattern instead of the drums 0.o. I never really hear it in late 70's/80's punk as far as I know. Where did it come from? Who started it? Why is it so prevalent now? Does it have a name? |
That reminds me alot of Citizen Fish circa 1989-90. That whole ska vibe is pretty resounding.

I've noticed it too. Honestly, soon as I hear it, my mind auto-files the song or band into the punk genre. Great question.

I'd say the 90s, early NOFX and Blink182 had that kinda thing goin on. 80s pop punk was still mostly rooted in hardcore with stuff like Dag Nasty/Descendents/Husker Du.

lol ive used it making songs :p:
My reference to it is Nofx as WD mentioned but idk if they invented but it works, doesn't it? something about it clicks.. that chord progression is very over used as well i know tons of songs with that same pattern but they slow it down |

Same goes for that ''fast'' drum. I now consulted the allmighty let's talk music subreddit. Someone might know.. edit: I totally forgot about 7 Seconds. these songs were originally supposed to be released in 1983, but were in 1984. Listen to one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVR7jULxs3I Did 7 Seconds start it? It's pretty similar. |
