No but this isn't actually a joke???? Like punk has been whitewashed to be about cishet white dudes when it was basically started by POC/sex workers/queer ppl? Like it's not okay. Not at all and I refuse to see it as a laughing matter

I think a lot of the queer community within punk rock has shifted more towards indie rock over the years. There's a lot of stuff coming out lately that kinda fuses the two- bands like Hard Girls, RVIVR, Shannon and the Clams, Sourpatch, Mika Miko... I could go on. Maybe it's just because I live in a very queer friendly city but most of the recent punk/diy shows I've been to over the years had pretty diverse crowds. The sound just isn't what you'd call... I guess traditional punk for lack of a better description. And the values/politics are a little different.
Unless you're talking about the more commercialized bands? **** like Rancid and NOFX? In which case... yeah. Suburban white dudes is pretty much the most you'll get at those shows.

this is 2014, not 1977...it doesnt matter what it started out as, 35 years later a whole new generartion (and even another one) defines it for themselves....I can even go further and say that music is an "individual" experience: what matters is the perception and emotion to each individual listener, regardless of its social status impact I have a lot more respect for a person that listens to bubblegum pop because thats what he/she likes without any influence from peers or social groups as opposed to a person that claims to like a music style because of what its supposed to stand for within a certain social circle $.02
