"joy division" like bands what do you think?
Last 5 years there are a lot bands reminding directly this era. Which of cource i love but the influences are so obvious...
What do you think about it? |
? rephrase that for me... what do I thinki about Joy Division influenced artists? Or, Joy Division era? I mean I could be reading that assbackwards...which might be the case... But I need a clearer question to be able to answer...
|
Interpol, white lies, editors all are based on the same recipe
|
Interpol just had their 10 year anniversary for Turn On the Bright Lights btw... I love Interpol, I don't think that there is anything wrong, with using a recipe that worked for one band and modifying and using it again on a first album, as you go on and listen through the rest of their albums to they do eventually, find their own sound, and to say otherwise, you haven't really heard them... White Lies, I haven't heard but I will give it a listen.. The Editors, are ok, certainly not bad albums but not ones I can't wait to get home and spin.. Again there is nothing wrong with being influenced by a group that were ahead of their time.. How many bands would there be if there were no...dare I say it beatles?
|
You might be right for the interpol but ... Everytime i hear a new song from one of these bands i get confused.
|
because you mistake them for Joy Division, seeing as how Ian Curtis has been dead for 30 years or so...how are you confused...
|
I don't do forth rate imitators.
|
No they don't do you...
|
I think people exaggerate this whole Joy Division copy bands, Just take each band for what they are. No point trying to compare them to Joy Division.
|
^ true but you can't help but see the similarities in their work...Tone, song structure, even vocals, hell I have seen some where the only thing that was missing was an Ian Curtis impersonator...
|
+1 @RoxyRollah
|
hell are we going? I don't even know you like that I can't be your + 1
|
I don't recall that many Joy Division imitator bands. In the early Eighties there was a local band in Boston named The Dark that explored a lot of the same emotional territory as Joy Division but really didn't sound like Joy Division. I'm not sure what happened to The Dark... They simply disappeared into thin air after a couple of years.
Certainly, Joy Division wasn't the first band to explore the dark side of reality, but few band were so utterly convincing as Joy Division was. White Lies sounds like a "lite" version of Joy Division, but they came on the scene 30 years after the death of Ian Curtis. |
Wow.. i just realised interpol does sound alot like Joy division but like a more polished version of them.
i always associated the deep voice as being similar but now thinking about it they are also similar rhythm wise although Interpol has way better timing than joy division. Im srry if what i said is very obvious but i literally just figured this out now after reading this thread lol |
|
sad what happened to the lead singer of joy division.

If anything they sound like a JD clone! |

it's got that same deep voice and the guy even sounds like him a little! I also agree this band you posted sounds alot like them as well. |
No darling The Drums are infinitely more poppy then Joy Division was.

And the other songs i heard from them don't really sound like Joy division but i think in that song money their vocals are very similar and even the vibe of the song sounds a little joy divisiony to me lol :p: |
Quote:
over and over again until you can tell me how these two even remotely sound similar.... |

Also if i listen to too much joy division im likely to kill myself so no thank you. :p: |

That's only in the chorus and if you didn't like me comparing them to Joy division you're really gonna hate my next statement Johnny Pierce, the lead singer of the Drums? Better singer than Ian Curtis. (yea i said it) |

i don't mean to sell you on anything it's just my personal opinion. And i was kidding about him being a better singer (obviously) but as you mentioned, he does high hit those high notes so he is a good singer (if not compared to Ian) And again, my comparison is in the deep vocals not which band is better and i tell you, im not the only one who made that comparison, in the youtube comments of that Drums video someone posted "Boy Division" as a joke saying they sound alike. |

There's been plenty of bands over the years that sounded like Joy Division clones (such as Editors) and I can safely say that The Drums aren't one of them. I don't know where he's getting the comparison.
As regards A Place To Bury Strangers, I can hear a Joy Division influence in some of their stuff but I would never call them clones. Joy Division never sounded this noisy and spaced-out: |

This is true man. I will give you that. And Missing you is the tune I was looking for that sounded most like Joy Division. I just went with that one out of laziness...Lol, I got tired of looking...haha |
Quote:
now i admit, the bands you guys have posted sound more like Joy division than the Drums, in fact they sound so similar it's practically the Joy division formula but the singers don't have that deep voice ian had. |
Quote:
If you're going to list The Drums as a Joy Division clone you might as well list every second indie/post-punk band that has emerged in the last 35 years. |

Fine, gang up against me, see if i care.. >_>
I still think that 'money' sounds like a polished pop version of Joy division! |

Im not a hardcore fan for their whole 2 albums. Love is the correct term. I just kno they dont sound like the drums.
|
Has anyone mentioned The National?
|
Fra Lippo Lippi's In Silence album played like a Joy Division tribute album.
Still liked it though. |
