i think the 'post' in post-punk also associates it with post-modernism, since a lot of it is an intellectual response to the 'spirit' of punk, and in many ways a reflection on its failure

MC5 and the sex pistols both had svengali managers, john sinclair and malcolm mclaren respectively, that were responsible for the image of the bands. That doesn't change the fact that they wrote their own songs and played their own instruments...beneath all the hype both were pretty good bands.

Malcolm Mclaren couldn't have been trying to make them look punk, because their was no "punk" in popular consciousness...maybe glam rock. I don't think malcolm was even working at a record label so your argument holds no water.

....and since I'm back to this thread after a few weeks...I still think the ramones were the first punk band.

An Aussie band, The Saints, who were later involved in the UK punk scene started before the Ramones. Just saying. I think punk started with the Velvet Underground and the Stooges. They might not have called themselves punk, but they were

The Tubes (pre-80's stuff). They probably were too talented (musically) to be considered Punk, but I think they were. They were incredible live. Saw them more than a few times when I lived in San Fran. in the 70's.

I do get annoyed how the Damned are so overlooked in the British punk movement. Their debut was out just before the Sex Pistols album.
