You have to give Malcom McLauren credit for coining the term punk and Vivienne Westwood the credit for creating the punk style. But weren't McLauren and Westwood simply marketing a kind of music and fashion style that had already been around for long time?

There were lots of groups in the UK playing American R&B in 1963, but it was Brian Epstien who packaged the Beatles as a musical commodity. Ironically prior to Epstien's involvement, the Beatles dress, acted and sounded like punk rockers.

McLaren didn't coin the term, and while Vivienne Westwood certainly deserves a lot of credit in terms of the style, I wouldn't go so far as saying she created it.

If it wasn't for the the Brit punks nobody would give a flying fuck about The Ramones, Patti Smith or Television.

How have you just managed to say in one sentence, what I've been trying to get across in more than half a dozen posts?
