I understand

I really can't make the hip hop/rock comparison anyway. Since Rock has been around and growing way longer than hip hop.

Since hip hop just "started" in the late 70's with slow "hop on a band wagon" "growth", and any "growth" stopped around 2001.

There's alot more rock than hip hop so it's understandable to see the need for said sub-genres, and just because some of the hottest record labels or clothing lines claim some bands as punk doesnt mean squat, since those people use the punk label to sell.

Also the reason this thread's here's mainly because umm, look who made the thread?

"O MA GAWD WHUUU LIKES PIERCE THE VEIL????!?"

There are some pointless sub genres though, ones that just don't need to exist. There's also people who take sub genres way too far. Bands should still be able to sound different in a sub genre.

Anyways, I'm fine with people liking the type of music they like.
I just dislike how a genre gets associated with totally different music, that usually doesn't appeal to it's original audience, and that latter version is usually the more popular one and the people that listen to it usually have no idea about the original genre. It just shouldn't be considered the same thing.

Hell, Emo's got it worse. Emo and screamo used to be an offshoot of post-hardcore that sounds a bit similar. But now it's also entirely different. I've heard people say they hate emo and screamo, yet they've only listened to the new equivalent. When I then showed them what Emo was like at one point, they actually didn't think it was bad at all.

So yeah, what annoys me about it is that a genre gets lumped together with a different genre like that, and how most people aren't really educated about it at all. It gives a genre an extremely different reputation.

Third wave ska is an example of a genre that does have a different name, but many people are still uneducated about it. I love Third Wave Ska, but I can see why fans of the original Jamaican Ska or even 2 tone ska can really dislike it. I've heard of people loving reggae but hating ska..Even though originally ska came before reggae and was very similar. That's because Whenever people talk about ska, they somehow assume it's Third Wave Ska, when it really should be about the original Jamaican ska bands, so again, it gives it a very different reputation.

edit: btw, my favourite Fugazi record is actually one that doesn't sound like post-hardcore at all. I have no idea what genre it would be considered, but I like it. it's the 13 songs album, a collection of their first two EP's.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMOAXm94VWo, I've listened to this song 13 times(what a coincidence), but it's a very inaccurate representation of the band :P. I recommend listening to the album ''Repeater'' instead.
