he's definitely ridiculously talented, and a great drummer, but I think since he's such a well known drummer his talent has been blown out of proportion, thus creating a large amount of people to think he's nothing special at all. Maybe he's not Pert, but he definitely takes Blink 182 to that next level, and he's done a genius job of positioning himself as the most famous drummer of the era, by working with tons of bands, rappers, etc etc.

Charlesclerc 03-23-2014 11:38 AM

I think He's famous because He's makin a lot of featuring with famous Rap/Hip Hop Artists...

Psychedub Dude 03-25-2014 08:39 AM

I agree with the people saying that its subjective and really depends on the genre. Hes not astounding or legenadary as a drummer but like Freebase said he keep a rhythm right on point and fits his mold well.

And I think it was Big3 who mentioned this but alot of people really dont many drummers by name or off hand but if you mention Barker most people will immediately know who your talking about. Say if you mention some guys like George Hurley, Bud Gaugh or Mitch Mitchell it may not sound so familair haha :thumb:

People tend to forget this but he(Barker) was also in The Aquabats for a short period.

Forward To Death 03-25-2014 09:35 PM

He's definitely considered talented because he's popular, and that's what some people like to argue with music: perception being reality, which is total bull****. I think he is talented, he just isn't that talented in the grand scheme of music, which most people have absolutely no knowledge of. It's the same thing for a lot of popular music artists.

I continue to be astonished that this is even a topic of conversation. This thread it literally the only place I've ever seen anyone describe this guy as noteworthy in any way.

Psy-Fi 03-26-2014 04:20 AM

Travis who?

He kinda is, wheter we like him or not Travis is a working musician, none of us are in a position to look down on him because he has accomplished more than any of us.

I don't see how him being a working musician makes him noteworthy on a site dedicated to talking about working musicians.

Fair point, but all im trying to say is, are we really in a position to look down on Travis as a musician?

At least he is has done something ya know?

There are some musicians we don't personally like so we discredit them without adding anything ourselves.

Ive done this i admit it, my ego judges other ppl who have accomplished more than me but even so the fact is Travis is adding more to this world than my ****ty insults ever will.

i don't wanna explain the obvious but once we judge ppl like we are doing him, it automatically claims a sense of superiority, like some random dude on a music forum is better than Travis just cause he thinks blink sucks.

Nah man, whether you like him or not you can't say he is a ****ty drummer because truth is he isn't you just don't like him for wthvr reason.

it's kinda like mixing your ego with facts.

Goofle 03-27-2014 01:20 PM

I only know the guys name because of this thread. Maybe he is in a band I know or something?

Ok, but what does that have to do with either of the posts of mine that you replied to?

Well your post wasn't that bad but you kinda implied considering Travis a credible musician is a waste of time.

I wasn't trying to single you out, i was generalising when i responded to you.

Mostly cause i think Travis is a decent drummer but i think ppl instantly go to insulting his god awful Blink popularity (because i do think it's awful) and confuse that with his skill as a drummer.

I am with you. I laugh when I scroll through and see this here. Cause no one I know thinks he is talented. Not even the people that like Blink 182, think he is talented.

I am gonna come in here and point out something. Because you don't make music, doesn't make you less qualified to speak on the topic. I wish I were talented musically, sadly I am not. But that doesn't mean that all the years I have invested in music as a hobby don't account for something. Pease go sit down somewhere. All that time I sunk into my hobby, has given me a trained ear for good music.

Not saying that Roxy, i know you can't stop ppl from voicing their opinions.

But go play the drums and then tell me Travis is a ****ty drummer.. see how hard it is to do what a no talent hack like Travis is able to do.

I wasn't implying that. I was just registering my astonishment at the assumption implicit in the subject of this thread: that everyone considers Travis Barker so talented. Prior to reading this thread I wasn't aware that anyone held that opinion.

I don't do things I know I suck at ;) Cough* Let that be a lesson to you Barker.

Black Francis 03-27-2014 04:15 PM

@Janzoon

aight man fair enough. :)

i saw the opposite, ppl saying he had no talent as a drummer and that's why i defended him a bit.

cause honestly, he's not a bad drummer it's just that alot of ppl dislike Blink and therefore thinks he sucks as well.

since we cannot measure taste, we have to measure skill.

Travis might not be the best drummer in the world but that doesn't mean he has no talent, listen to Adam's song or this one, the drumming is pretty good

The fact that someone can't play the drums doesn't mean that they can't find someone to be a poor drummer. I'm a better drummer than he is anyway, do I have permission to say he sucks now?

No.

:p:

I don't care, think whtvr you like.

Im tired of being the only one defending Travis, this is obviously a loosing battle for me.

(but i still think he is a good drummer.)

Don't try to defend him to people that just don't like Blink.

It's like preaching to a choir of walls. It does no good.

I like his hip hop collaborations.

Let's just say that non-drummers might have a higher propensity for thinking TB is very talented versus drummers and/or individuals who listen to enough exceptional drummers to know the difference between a great one and a mediocre one.

You can probably make a pretty accurate assumption out of just that, and never have needed to be astonished.

He did that mix album, with tons of artists. it was great.

I bet a new one of those albums would be big, seems like hes in love with that new girl too
