Ghost Mice (must-read)
Now that I've probably grabbed the attention of more of you by putting ''must-read'' in brackets in the title of this thread, I will now tell you about this wonderful band I've discovered: Ghost Mice!
I figured this would be the most appropriate section for this, as they're most often labelled as folk-punk. But I'd personally label them much more folk than punk, but influences of both genres are clearly there. What I like so much about this band is their creativity with the album Europe, in 2006, these guys traveled Europe with almost no money, hitch-hiking and taking trains everywhere. (They've also toured this way rather than using tour buses to get to their shows.) Anyway, on this album, they talk about their travels through Europe, the experiences they had, the people they met etc, and there's a song for each country they visited, and the representations of the songs are very accurate if I say so myself. (Although I can only really speak for England as it's where I'm from, and haven't visited any other countries mentioned, but you can be the judge of that.) A lot of people I've shown this band are put off by the vocals. Admittedly, they aren't amazing, and the music does sound quite thin and hollow. But personally I think the idea is good enough to warrant this. To me the vocals sound kind of fast-paced, and... Clueless, I suppose is my best way of wording it. I think they fit well with the way he is singing about how they are traveling around Europe with no real plans. Anyway: Enough of my babbling on, here is some Ghost Mice. 01 Ghost Mice - England - YouTube |
they released a sort of acoustic punk album last year, yeah?
The cover had Punch & Judy on it? I heard it was pretty good last year but despite having it in my collection, haven't got round to listening to it yet but will do soon. |
I love Ghost Mice, they are one of my favorite bands, they do their best work on their splits in my opinion. Their half of their split with AJJ is phenomenal, as is their half of the Defiance, Ohio and their half of the Pretty Hot Split. They have a new split coming out with Ramshackle Glory next week that I can't wait to get. So excited.

I love it. I haven't heard of them before and they sound a little cooky but cooky is a good thing. Thanks for 'grabbing my attention'.

They sound alright. Their vocals are a little shabby, though, but the mixture of punk and different folk styles is a fresh breath of cold air for my sweaty and tired playlist.

The last genre I'd ever expect a bunch of Brits to like is folk-punk.
I guess one of the landmark bands of the genre had to write an album entirely about Europe to get their attention? |
I love Ghost Mice. I used to listen to Europe a lot a few years ago.

They seem to have some decent songs but I can't really hack the vocals and usually I'm willing to forgive that area. |
