Well, there are a few stories of homophobia/racism in punk, as well as the whole "fuck the government" stance which is closer to libertarian than liberal. But I think that may be outdated.

What may have seen like a big revelation for him, discovering that a lot of punk bands are on the far left, for the rest of was probably a big no **** sherlock! As for his argument, Marxism and Anarchism are not tied together. Anyone who has read history knows that Mikhail bakunin (the world's most notable anarchist) & Karl Marx hated each other, largely because of their disagreement on the role of the state, in which Bakunin wanted none. Despite the Clash's left leaning principles, the vast majority of hardcore punk bands on the left are rooted in anarchism, an equally fruity ideology in my opinion, but I must also concede that I've seen a lot of good stuff come out of practicing anarchists. Communal housing, animal rights activism & general good bleeding heart liberal causes. So it is not all bad. If he knew anything about hardcore or punk he would know that there were a lot of right wing punk ideals in a lot of punk bands as well. In fact the whole New York hardocore scene from Agnostic Front, the Cro Mags down, had a whole whack of conservative ideals floating around in their heads. Provided it doesn't promote hate, diversity of views is a good thing not a bad thing, which is why I can't stand anarcho punks who denounce bands like Agnostic Front or the Exploited because they don't fit their particular mold of what punk rock should be in their eyes. To me that is tolitarainism thinking, Marxism if you would like me to give this guy some credit, but ironically he's doing the exact same thing by telling you that you shouldn't listen to punk because of its political views. So who's the real totalitarian here??? Anyways there is my rant, this post had been bugging me lol |

Everything boils down to what you take away from music. Personally I have never sat and listened to punk rock and went "you know what, lets kill the presidant and move to mother russia" Posts like this rank up there with me sitting here and telling you guys hey, dont listen to bands that promote christianity or else you might go to heaven. Music gives its listener what they take from it, most of us dont really wind up having a political belief because we listen to the clash. I certainly dont feel like going to church just because I have Mark Shultz on my playlist nor do I feel like going out and killing and raping the neighborhood children because I listen to Cradle of Filth....

To start with, being a communist doesn't mean being Stalin. Ever heard of Rosa Luxemburg's beliefs? Socialism is nothing without freedom. Freedom of speech, of press. That's not stalinism, is it.
The second thing - The Clash was pretty far from nihilism. They were never like the Pistols, shouting No future and all that. Joe declared himself to believe in socialism. Didn't like the authorities then, though. He loved people and believed in them. "Without people you're nothing", remember? Check out the Strummerville foundation. |
