So I mentioned that I would be taking down some of the big commercial acts to put something more underground up. I think what I will do is keep bands like the Offspring on the list, but add their songs below, as pretty much everyone on the planet knows who they are.

There is of course a lot of animosity directed at the Offspring for making punk rock safe for the mainstream, so it should be noted that before the Epitaph craze, skate punk was a lot more obnoxious & rooted closer to thrashcore & crossover thrash. To my recollection, it mostly consisted of obscure bands playing fast thrash songs Here are some modern bands that have kept the tradition alive.

25. Rage Against the Machine, Genre (Rapcore/funk hardcore) era, 90's &

Ah back from the grave. I was going to pull Rage Against the Machine for some pioneers of blackened crust, but to be honest, they're not that good, so no more obscure stuff unless I revamp the list. Anyways...

Rage Against the Machine has been labelled as "alternative metal" by the mainstream press, but I would argue that their influence is largely hardcore. Zack de la Rocha of course is remembered for fronting the hardcore punk act Inside Out, where as Morella comes from a more contemporary rock background, but was also influenced by punk to an extent, so I hear a lot of funk & I hear a lot punk, but...I'm not too sure where the metal comes in???

I don't have a lot of rapcore on here, and I'm not overly big on these guys, but they have some decent tunes, so I guess this is as a good spot as any.

Well I didn't expect to see these guys on here. Fair shout though, alt metal is a pretty vague term so I see your point. I would just go for funk metal to be honest, although Zach is obviously pretty punk orientated, think Morello was a producer on a few punk albums as well, not sure though.

There has been a lot of bands connected to the hardcore scene in one way or another over the decades that have been plucked by the majors and repackaged as something else.

Fair enough for me, I prefer the genre to stay undergound, as soon as something goes mainstream you get all sorts of fakes and posers coming in and playing sell out music.

If I were asked to pick a band that best described the sound of American hardcore in the 80's, I would pick Black Flag. Few punk bands reached their level of success or popularity in the American underground, but I have my grievances.

The further I go down this list, the harder it becomes to separate great musical compositions from personal preference. In short, musical taste is subjective, and guitarist Greg Ginn flirted to much with jazz and off tempo guitar riffs for my liking. While it worked for one band topping this list, I prefer my Black Flag served straight up, Drinking & Driving ect.

(PS: It's about time someone remastered their stuff, the sound quality could use a boost)

TSOL

TSOL was one of those oversights that really should have been on the list. I must apologize to fans of old school American punk that a lot of their favourite bands didn't originally get put on.

When I set out to do this list, I wanted to try balance US & UK bands somewhat equally, the problem I found was that American punk never really hit the death throlls, while in England, it was virtually swept away for an entire decade during the 90's. So there is more USA bands on here than any other country, but also a lot of diversity in respects to genres and the timeline.

As for TSOL, started out hardcore, then went post punk & then sold out with a horrible glam metal album, or as one of my favourite you tube quotes go "Where glam metal fails, punk rock prevails."

Before the internet became a widespread consumer item, the popularity of a hardcore band was often determined by their geographical location, and few punk bands were as popular as the Dayglo Abortions in my country.

Largely remembered for having their record tied up on obscenity charges, & having a track on Napalm Death's Leaders not Followers, the Dayglo Abortions pumped out obnoxious guitar ripping songs like **** My **** Stinks & Hide the Hamster.
