65. Amebix Genre (Crust punk/Post punk) Bristol UK, era 80's &

Hellbastard Genre (Crust Punk) Newcastle UK, era 80's

All right time to end the Canadian love fest and get back on track. We had Terror, Minor Threat & now Amebix!

As the godfathers of crust, Amebix has been immortalized as legends in recent years, largely stemming from the rise in popularity of crust, and the influence they've had on key metal bands. It is a well deserved though, for the Arise album is a definite classic that should be in every hardcore fans collection. I'd have placed this band higher, but the follow up album was not so impressive, they should have stuck with Alternative Tentacles.

Largactyl

Arise!

Carnage

Hellbastard

While I have much praise for the brilliance of Amebix, Hellbastard resides as a mere footnote in my punk collection. To sum it up briefly, Amebix's creatively laid the foundations for a new musical genre, and while Hellbastard played some part in this as well, I find for the most part, that they sound like a second rate thrash metal band.

A classic Canadian hardcore band well known south of the border that I think is better than a lot of the second tier US hardcore bands like MDC, Naked Raygun ect, so I put them on the list.

I forget

Victims of the Womanizer

She's not on the menu

Ahhh, here they are.

My personal favorite as well is their first recordings.

Such a cool little sound they had. These are from the "Real Men Don't Watch Quincy" bootleg (which was released though at shows in the earlier days).

If you have not read this, I recommend picking it up:
Punkbooks.com - GFY Press

I managed to snag a limited version with the different cover from this one.

Chris Walter is a great guy, really into his craft... his books have been really great to read. I also recommend the ones he did on Dayglo Abortions and Personality Crisis.

But yeah, I am huge on SNFU. Last saw them back in July... got this pic with Ken (Chi Pig) Chinn.

Cool man, I met Chi back in the early mid 90's, but ouch, doesn't look like the years have been to kind to him, he's aged a lot.

64. Street Kids Genre (oi!/Punk rock) France, era Modern &

Skinflicks Genre (oi!/Punk rock) Luxembourg, era 90's/00's &

Stage Bottles Genre (oi!/Punk rock) Germany, era 90's/00's

I think I mentioned this is primarily an anglophone list, that being said whether it's Peruvian crust punk, or Japanese thrashcore, I try to keep my eyes & ears open for music from around the world, and in the last couple of years there has been a resurgence in oi! music coming out of France. The Street Dogs are one of the best of these bands, as their album is packed full of melody.

Avec eux

Skinhead de Paris

Working Class

Skinflicks

Another good melodic oi! skinhead band from Europe giving the finger to far right and left politics with "What I Am"

What I am

Skinhead

I Hate Hippies

Stage Bottles

Yet another skinhead oi! band with really good melodies

Solidarity

Real Skinhead

Hooligan

Well a couple years of meth and heavy drinking will do this to a person.

If you can track down this doc, it is worth watching:

63. Driller Killer Genre (Crust Punk) Sweden , era 90's /present &

Death Before Dishonor Genre (Hardcore/Beatdown Hardcore) Massachusetts USA era 00's/present

I'm not a fan Sweden's most notable crust band Skitsystem, most likely because it featured members of At the Gates, a band I've never been able to get into, so I give you someone just as notable, and more rockin in my opinion, Driller Killer. Shades of The Exploited in the last song.

Next up my little modern crossover thrash duel between metal and hardcore, finally picked the winner.

From out of Nowhere

Alcoholocaust

God Forgives

Death Before Dishonor

I've reached my threshold with this thread, so I am just going to start randomly plopping bands down. Death before Dishonor has been and American hardcore staple for awhile.

62. Short Sharp Shock Genre (Crossover thrash) Liverpool UK, era Modern &

Feed the Rhino Genre (Post Hardcore/Hardcore) Kent UK, era Modern

SSS:

Allright time for the crossover thrash duel.

Hailing from Liverpool, Short Sharp Shock (SSS) plays short speedy skate thrash, so defiantly on the hardcore side of things. They are largely on here because of the song Black Night White Light, which has a wicked guitar solo, and in my opinion is better than anything Municipal Waste has put out. There is also some distinctive talent here, but there are a few reasons I wouldn't crown them kings of modern crossover thrash.

First, the said song above was from their early 7 inch, and I haven't heard them do anything as good since. Their second album the Dividing Line was a nice tribute to skate thrash, but a bit of a wash. Their last album was fairly good, but nothing spectacular, understandably though they had gone through a lineup change.

There are a lot of bands that start out great, but are never able to recreate their early magic, and that is what separates the good bands from those that become legendary. So now let's move onto a metal band that is defiantly on route to becoming the latter.

Black Night White Light

Overload

Warhorse

Feed the Rhino

Ok one last modern UK hardcore band, as I find these guys really grow on you after a while. Overall, I feel like the modern UK stuff on here is outstripping the American stuff 2 to 1, but there has been such a massive explosion of hardcore bands over there for about the last number of years so...

Tides

The Burning Sons

61. Toxic Holocaust Genre (Crossover thrash) Oregon USA, era Modern &

Gallhammer Genre (Doom Metal/Blackened Crust) Japan, era modern

There are punk influences in Toxic Holocaust, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out they're a bonafide metal band, and probably the only true blue metal band on this list outside of Black September, but crossover genres are funny that way, DRI hardcore, Nuclear Assault metal, Iskra hardcore, Black September metal, my personal favorite song Bitch sounds like slayer melded with D beat.

Anyhow, I'm not a metal expert, but I think it's safe to say that Toxic Holocaust are not only the kings of modern crossover thrash, but also one of the better things going in the new wave of thrash at the moment, and in the long run, I think they will be remembered as one of the more notable metal bands of their era.

All right one more set of ten, I'll drop a few bombs and then I'm taking another long break.

Bitch

Feedback, Blood, And Distortion

Nuke the Cross

Gallhammer

I thought I would stick a metal band with a metal band. Despite Gallhammer's crust influence, I find, from what I've heard, that the Doom Metal is pretty prominent, as most of their songs have that slow sludgy depressing sound to them, popular band, but just not my flavour. Here's a more crusty song.

Blind my eyes
