Looking for Punk Version of "Godzilla" from before '89

I had a mix tape from about 1989 that had a lot of really hard to find punk/indie stuff. There were B-sides only available in vinyl and such.

One cut was a punk version of Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla". I cannot seem to find who the artist was or where to get it.

I check out Wiki and they had some groups with covers listed, but it isn't Racer X, Fu Manchu, Sebastian Bach, or Fighting Gravity. Its not the Smashing Pumpkins either.

One big distinction from those cover is that the version I heard was very fast and all these covers listed have the original BOC slow beat.

i feel like i know what the OP is talking about....like it's on the tip of my tongue but i just can't recall....Bouncing Souls keeps popping into my brain but i don't think it's them

Thanks for the link. But that isn't it, still too slow a tempo. This version I'm looking for is more than double the tempo, the lead singer's belting out the lyrics so fast it's not immediately recognizable.

Other detail bits, there is a bit of sampling of screaming people and at the very end a sample of a belch. The mix tape had songs much older than '89 and the style seems to be from at least after the 1st punk wave. There are no UK accents (which any good English punk band would make no effort to suppress) so a North American band seems likely. The singer is male.

One of the things I really like about it above all these other covers (except Smashing Pumpkins' version) is that a good cover should add something or take another perspective from the original. Like the Bauhaus version of Third Uncle, it's a very different take.

The punk version of Godzilla I'm looking for is markedly different from the original, but most of the other covers of Godzilla I have seen are pretty much just playing the song in the same way with very little variation. They are attempting to mirror BOC and pretty much are coming off as a pale reflection.

Riddle me this or thunderpuss 2000?

MojoJojo 07-17-2012 05:22 PM

Nice, I didn't have any Bouncing Souls. Tried a few tracks and I need to get me some more from them.

I didn't see a Godzilla track in the discography, but the pitch and delivery of the lead signer isn't quite there. Still good stuff, but I don't thing that's them.

The tempo in the track I'm looking for is closer to a Hardcore Punk, breakneck speed. The tempo itself is closer to that of the Ramone's "Warthog" (although the vocals are much different). I'm trying to think of something to compare it to.

Thanks!

it wasn't bouncing souls but for some reason i am associating them with when i heard this....its fucking crazy man i am almost 99.2698% sure i know what you are talking about and even have it stuck in my head....just can't name the band :(

MojoJojo 07-17-2012 05:38 PM

Thanks! Checked em out and it wasn't on the list.
Superfuzz and Thunderpuss 2000 are alot more techno.
Riddle Me has more of rap slant.
The Psyclone Rangers take is very interesting, they had an interesting site of sample MP3s. Also not the one.
