I don't know about greatest of all time, but out of any punk or punk-influenced albums I've ever heard my favorites are 'Jane Doe', 'Worship & Tribute' and 'The Heat Death of the Universe'.

Not tr00 punx I know, but I've always preferred mixtures of genres, for some reason, apart from harsher/more challenging music.

I see Clash, and London Calling, are often mentioned in this thread; if anyone has an opinion about Joe Strummer´s later career, they´re welcome to join us here :-

I'm sure not Green Day...
I think Clash's "The Clash" was a huge breakthrough. And the Sex Pistols, but their lyrics are not as great!

The Sex Pistols' delightfully juvenile, misanthropic lyrics aren't as good as The Clash's "Look at me, look at me, aren't I just the most self righteous wannabe revolutionary in the whole entire world?!" lyrics? Please.

Yeah, they're not. Don't get me wrong, I love the Pistols. But their lyrics were not so revealing. Like, singing about anarchy can be good for guys who actually mean it and do something - like Crass. And Clash's songs such as "Rebel Waltz" or "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" are just genius. Sorry mate.

They have 2 different types of writing. The Clash would never write a song like "Bodies" and the Sex Pistols would never write a song like "Lost in the Supermarket".... but both of these songs, in their own respective way are equally great.

I do not see why you would compare them as songwriters, when they both have their own take on subjects. Be better off comparing 2 bands who have the same qualities.

I would compare them just because I like lyrics which resemble poetry just a bit. As in Joy Division for example. That's all.
I guess we were asked to pick our fav punk album. I wasn't sure which one to pick, but I decided it was Clash as I like their lyrics more. Simple as that, let's stop this nonsense

Perhaps a bad choice in light of the anarcho punk "scandal"?

They're just not self consciously revealing. I see the Clash as dressing up their youthful anger and frustration as something noble rather than just the generic youthful anger and frustration that it really is. The Sex Pistols (or at least Johnny Rotten) are at least honest that that anger is just that and don't bother with pretending that it's something else. They don't sing about anarchy because they want anarchy, they sing about anarchy to poke society in the eye and chuckle when everyone gets pissed off. "God Save the Queen" wasn't a protest song, it was just them childishly lashing out at the rest of society because it gives them pleasure to do so. They don't explicitly say it or necessarily even realize that they're saying it, but to me they're basically saying that youthful anger is what it is and indulging it is just plain fun.

Edit: And "Bodies" isn't a protest song about abortion, it's just Johnny Rotten pissing people off by saying "fuck" and "abortion" in a song. And I love that about the Sex Pistols.

Another bunch of self indulgent whiners. I can respect them for actually living up to their rhetoric, unlike the Clash, but they still managed to accomplish nothing. How many politicians did they put out of office? Who cared what they said except for some rejects that nobody cared about anyway?

I can like the Clash, but their lyrics are just self indulgent bull****, like most political protest music. At least the revolutionary kind. Music doesn't change the world. It doesn't incite political or social change. If the Clash wanted to accomplish something then they would have done something other than just sing songs. What they really wanted was to be rock stars. Politics was just a hobby that was never gonna get in the way of being rock stars.

I don't listen to too much punk music, but my personal favorite full-on punk album of all time would be...
"Greatest Hits" by Blink 182.

It has all of my favorite Blink 182 songs on there, I Miss You, Always, First Date, Down, Feeling This.
It's just missing Violence and Wishing Well.
