Exclamation Good Sticks and Cymbals for Punk Drumming?

What are some good sticks and cymbals for punk drumming? I currently use Vic Firth A5 drum sticks. I have white Pearl Forums with black hardware. I think I want to buy Paiste Rude cymbals for my kit. Are they any good? Also, I want to make my cymbals custom (black cymbals with my name in white) where do I do this? Thanks.

In my world, punk drummers look for the worst cymbals possible. Those are usually the ones with character. Cool thing is you can just buy some mediocre second-hand cymbals and beat the crap out of them, maybe rub them in dirt and all manner of filth, until they have that signature raw punk sh*ttiness that blends so well with the rest of the band. If you're gonna go punk, you may as well do it the right way.

But I guess now days folks are probably looking for that radio album sound, so if that's you, you'll probably not want to follow that advice.

Go to your local music dealers and actually hit some cymbals for yourself. That's really the best course you can take. As far as sticks, Vics are fine. 5A is fine as well. You'll probably want wood tips and not nylons. Nylons give you a little more brightness, which really isn't necessary, and takes away from the more solid, meaty tone you get from wood tips. Not to mention nylon tips have a tendency to fly off if you go hardcore on 'em.
Depending on how you angle your toms, you'll want to look at the shape of the tips as well. If you have a lot of angle on your toms, go with round tips so you're not digging holes in your skins as much. Otherwise, egg shapes are fine.

As to why you would want your cymbals black with your name on them, I have no idea... so I can't really comment on that.

I want my cymbals black simply because it would match the rest of my kit. I also think that there is a difference between sounding good, and trying to be blink182. I don't want **** cymbals, I want some quality. Anyway, thanks for the reply, and I figure I should let you know I play with my sticks backwards.

My comment was apparently too vague, and my sarcasm underwhelming...

The point is that you should be deciding based on experiencing the cymbals yourself, not whether someone else says a cymbal is "good for punk drumming".

I knew you were being sarcastic but I figured I'd answer you anyway. What do you think of Zildjians Pitch Black Cymbals? That sounds like they put style before sound, and I hope getting custom cymbals wouldn't compromise the sound anyway. I just figured I'd ask because I saw a guy with Black Rudes on Peal Drummers Forum, and thought I'd ask about them here.

I don't personally know how the coating affects the sound of the cymbal, but I wouldn't imagine it'd be totally game-changing in the larger scheme of things.

As far as Zildjian, the only cymbals of theirs I'd vouch for out of personal experience is the K series. Haven't tried the blacks. You might have better luck on a drumming forum where there's likely to be a significantly larger user base of more personal experience with a lot of different cymbals.

no there's not.

real punks don't care about matching cymbals. not even Pansy Division would care about that.

use trashcan covers for the cymbals

forget about sticks, use your hands

that's about as "punk" as it'll get
