punk for me is basically I, IV, V power chords played monotonally, a singer who can't sing, a straight 4/4 thwack drumbeat, one-note bassline
but I'm really just describing The Ramones, I suppose there's more to punk than that - I only really listen to them and the 1st wave of British punk and Refused |

^Yeah, that's basically it.
I don't really listen to, that often, what could be considered as pure punk, or punk-rock, but I looove when I hear this minimal punk aesthetic, DIY and 'I don't five a ****' attitude in other music. When everything becomes possible, rules are there to be broken...well, you get post-punk actually. That's when a real musical adventure begins. So, punk, although limited musically, was very liberating mentally. That is its most important legacy, imo.

Rock critics used it as a derogatory term for DIY acts. Like 'Krautrock'. I'm not saying anything is the prison bitch. The word 'punk' started as what they call bitches in prison.

I think that Ted Leo got it right when he said that punk was originally an attempt to get back to basic rock n' roll. That is number one. All of that other stuff (the DIY ethic, politics, musical freedom etc) came after.
Its important to remember that all of the original punk bands had managers and major label record deals. Likewise, they werent all political. That raw basic sound is really the only thing that they all have in common. |
