Crass - Penis Envy
I can't believe nobody mentioned this yet... the whole album is done with female vocals. |
I can't believe no one has mentioned The Distillers yet
|
Actually, the Distillers were mentioned on the first page. I love Brody's voice, even though I think she's kind of a ****ty person.
Wendy O of the Plasmatics, though if you want to get technical, she isn't really "punk". Kathleen Hannah of Bikini Kill Also, Star F_cking Hipsters on the album Until We're Dead has shared female/male vocals. |
So they were, My mistake, and I agree with you about Wendy O
|
Hey. We all make mistakes. At least you weren't huffy about it. (:
Kind of OT, but I would SO do Wendy O. |
Ha Ha I would do Wendy O aswell, You should check out a band from the UK called The Joy Formidable.
I think you'd like them |

I'm somewhere inbetween. To me she's another industry fame-leecher, but she still has enough talent of her own to scrape by without Daddy Armstrong. Also, divorce was pretty much inevitable... not many people get into relationships at 15, especially with someone 15 years their senior, and expect it to last long. Tim is another story. Sometimes I'd love to strangle him. [/derail] |
I hate Tim Armstrong, she is much MUCH MUCH more talented than he ever was.
|
Tim Armstrong is a functionally retarded racist.
|
my personal favorites are
Your Phone's off The Hook but You're Not - X Deep - Yellow Machinegun Number One Chicken - Red Aunts Orphans - Teenage Jesus and the Jerks Lost Again - Dancehall Crashers (a little bit of a stretch....still has some punk roots) Killing Floor - Naked Aggression Lullaby/Chuck - Blatz Blood One - Bikini Kill Bata Motel - Crass also some Nausea and Spitboy songs |

When Tim was in Operation Ivy he was great..but Rancid pretty much blows. Brody has a great voice and sounds exactly like Courtney Love.. and if Hole is considered punk Courtney has a great voice. |
Yeah Tim was great in Op Ivy but that was more about Jesse Michaels than it was Tim Armstrong...not to mention he was writing intelligent lyrics at 17 which is a bfd, Tim could never, not even at 40something be as brilliant of a writer as Jesse was (and probably is, never listened much to Common Rider) but back on target, Brody's voice is excellent, but even comparing her to Courtney Love...meh she's like her vocally but her lyrics are much more intense and emotional and cohesive than Love's are, and much better than anything Tim ever wrote. I think Tim just doesn't have it in him to write like that, he's an okay musician but he's not really a good lyricist. Whereas Brody isn't exactly the best guitarist but her lyrics are undoubtedly better than Tim.

I love the Pain Teens. Really screwed up Texas noise.
|
that song is incredible....

The Distiller's vocalist has a great raw sounding voice, nice and deep, though it always sounds the same in all the songs of hers I've heard. The Bikini Kill vocalist's voice sounds screechy and thin to me...though she's got good anger. Her songs remind me of chalk on a chalkboard. I...don't care for her voice much. :( Even though I admire what she's saying, and that she's saying it. Bikini Kill wdc 1992: |
The screechy thing is kind of the entire point, Veg. Its not for everybody. Her voice gets annoying after a while, but Kathleen Hannah (Bikini Kill vocalist) is in an electroclash band and sings slightly less obnoxiously.
If you listen to music for lyrics that resonate with you politically, Le Tigre works. |
i had to ween myself off of Le Tigre....once i hear them they stay in my head for months (esp. that song and the song about Cassavetes)
thanks for the relapse.....:) |

Hmm, the singing in "Hot Topic" by Le Tigre sounded so childlike and melodic to me that I thought the song could be considered soul, if it weren't for the drum pattern and a bit of distorted guitar. Their singing didn't seem to have much edge and made the song sound very tame...although of course the topic is good! :) I'll try listening to some more of their stuff. Maybe there's something harsher. I probably just prefer a punk sound to electroclash. Thank you for mentioning electroclash, by the way. I'd never heard of that genre before, Oh Wise and Knowledgable Tumor. |
Kathleen Hanna is a twat, Riot Grrl was a ****ty movement
The female crust bands > Riot Grrl They had better ideas and much more important things to say than LOOK I HAVE A VAGINA LET ME SHOW YOU IT RECLAIMING MY SEXUALITY AYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY IMO Vi Subversa of Poison Girls was a much better feminist figure, as she was a housewife/mother and knew of both sides, rather than Kathleen Hanna spouting off her bull**** |

But I definitely knew about Bikini Kill and had respect for them. As for Riot Grrl - I dunno. The girls I knew at the time didn't need that kind of thing to feel 'empowered' but I bet a lot of girls all over the place had never even thought about standing up against viral small-town-style sexism until they heard Bikini Kill et al |

Paloma said she felt Riot Grrrl was a ****ty movement, and you, Engine, think it was probably helpful to women. I'm curious about what led you both to have such a difference of opinion. Paloma, what about the Riot Grrrl movement did you think was ****ty? I actually don't know anything about it other than the opinions you and Engine gave and what I've read on Wikipedia. I think it is interesting that "Riot grrrls took a growling double or triple r, placing it in the word girl, as a way to take back the derogatory use of the term." I like when music connects with social movements and history rather than just being pure entertainment, so now I'm more curious about all the bands that considered themselves part of the Riot Grrrl movement. |
All or Nothing HC
Bikini Kill Bratmobile Grut Toy Attica I Object Vice Squad Naked Aggress Bruise Violet and my favorite right now is definately Blatz |
Oh jesus. Fighting over which feminist movement is better is like fighting over which sect of Christianity is better. They both had a message with a slightly different twist. I don't give a s*** who is "better" but I know that not all women have the same experiences so some related to one or the other. I related to the riot girl movement.

more bands:
GRUK A.P.P.L.E. DIRT THE SLITS HUGGY BEAR ABRUPT MANKIND? CRASS POSION GIRLS 45 GRAVE THE VOIDS FOR F*** SAKE BRUISE VIOLET (broke up) SKARP SECRET SECT THE GRUPS SECRET CERVIX FLEAS AND LICE CONTRAVENE BLACK BIRD RAUM RIOT THIS ARCTIC FLOWERS A PRETTY MESS INDUSTRIA END IS NOW SIN REMEDIO THE POTENTIAL LUNATICS KILLER LOW LIFE and the list goes on... and the type of band it is that a girl is in doesn't matter in the punk scene. if the girl has a brain and voices their own opinions, not the media's, it's good enough and inspires other females to empower themselves and try to make this world a more equal place. if you discourage a female band, your discouraging the future. |

Were there just two main feminist punk music movements...the "female crust punk" bands and the "Riot Grrl" movement? How do you feel the two movements' song messages differed? I haven't heard enough of their music to know yet. And what made you relate to the riot grrl movement more than the crust movement? I agree with the idea of not wanting to discourage any band because of its particular feminist political message, partly for the reason you mention! |
