My Punk rawk is really limited, srysly.

Anything outside the basics like The Clash and Sex Pistols and I'm lost. I tried the Dead Kennedys once but they didn't really do it for me, maybe I heard the wrong album.

Album recommendations from Punk bands would be appreciated and if I like them, I will lick your face.

these are all good shouts, nice one dude. I've not heard that Dwarves album, only Blood Guts & Pussy (i think it was called) which I never got into, they were quite the crazy band from what I've heard. I would add:

Fear - The Record
X - Los Angeles & Wild Gift
Wipers - any of their first three albums
Angry Samoans - both their albums!

bob. 08-09-2010 04:08 PM

i love Dwarves....there is nothing more punk rock than sex, drugs and satan

Wipers were phenomenal

i should have included Los Angeles

Sansa Stark 08-09-2010 04:46 PM

lol michael, I have a punk comp I made up, if you want me to pm you a link I can

Aww, thanks Dayna but I'm looking for classics in the genre rather than a comp.

Brilliant, thanks. I'll work my way through that list. :D

bob. 08-09-2010 05:00 PM

they are all good...

i'll upload a 1 song from each in the 10 song comp thread

Sansa Stark 08-09-2010 07:20 PM

Well don't forget

X Ray Spex - Germfree Adolescents
Black Flag - Damaged
Crass - Stations of the Crass
The Germs - MIA

bob. 08-09-2010 10:23 PM

really you would Stations over Feeding of the 5000?

i have honestly never taken the time to listen to X-Ray Spex...! will have to fix that

Sansa Stark 08-09-2010 10:30 PM

Yeah, I love Stations the Best, but it's really hard to pick for me, I ****ing love Crass

bob. 08-09-2010 10:34 PM

i think Stations and Christ kind of blend together in my mind....i tend to confuse which album has which songs....but yeah Crass is a very important band and just noisy as ****....

Sansa Stark 08-10-2010 09:34 AM

And I looove their noisiness

James 08-10-2010 09:38 AM

Do you guys like Yes Sir, I Will. I love it but it's not as popular.

bob. 08-10-2010 09:56 AM

Yes Sir I Will is an odd album....it's good and i love the origins of the title...i made a t-shirt with the back cover quote on it...
http://parolesdunpunk.tripod.com/Crass/Pighead.jpg

still love that....i think i'll throw it on now and see what i think...i don't think i've listened to it in well over 10 years

edit* yeah this is good....nobody really played like this....amazing

debaserr 08-16-2010 12:43 AM

most punk does little to nothing for me. my favorite punk album is adolescents s/t. what would you recommend. don't recommend me the clash or minutemen or ramones or sex pistols please.

bob. 08-16-2010 09:27 AM

Angry Samoans - Back From Samoa....The Ballad Of Jerry Curlan may be one of the greatest songs ever written
D.I. - Horse Bite Dog Cries.....a couple of members from Adolescents are in DI....good southern California punk
Dayglo Abortions - Feed Us A Fetus....seriously stupid songs...this album great after this they leaned towards a more 'metal' sound
Reagan Youth - Collection Of Pop Classics.....the cover can be a bit misleading....sarcastic lyrics mixed with speedy 3 chord rock.....but really well done
T.S.O.L. - 1st EP/Dance With Me....the five songs on the EP are amazing and seemingly forgotten....Dance With Me is just classic "death punk"

Dayglo Abortions HAhaaa! Can I marry you?

I would recommend all these and...

Social Unrest - SU-2000 An awesome punk/ hardcore album.
Descendents - Milo Goes to College
Blatz - shared LP with Fear: group of singers who put together some of the most unique female sounds, allthough its not all female
Naked Aggression
bunch others i cant think of right now.

Sansa Stark 08-16-2010 02:34 PM

Blatz didn't share an LP with Fear...that was Filth

Insane Guest 08-27-2010 08:54 PM

Hey guys, Urban recommended Poison Idea a while back, they've been on my top played ever since, and others like them? Any other good bands welcome!

Insane Guest 08-28-2010 11:23 AM

Thanks Mate, will be checking them out soon!

bob. 08-31-2010 01:20 PM

Poison Idea was the fattest band in hardcore....irreplaceable

but

Negative Approach, Jerry's Kids, Necros, and The Freeze...all have the same furious anger that poison Idea had....as well as everything already mentioned

Give me some good hardcore punk bands, please. I'm on a downloading spree.

Something that I haven't heard already would be really nice, too.

after looking over your last.fm page....i came up with these ten suggestions (with examples!)

SS Decontrol - early 80's Boston hardcore
YouTube - SS Decontrol - "Get It Away" Taang! Records
Artificial Peace - early 80s DC hardcore....they released quite a bit considering they were only together for one year
YouTube - artificial peace 3 *at 5:01 'The Future-Think For Yourself...best tracks
Christ On A Crutch - late 80's early 90's hardcore from DC/Seattle
YouTube - Christ On A Crutch : 'Nation of Sheep' / 'Sleep Of Reason'
Authorities - completely ignored hardcore form the late 70's via Stockton California...
YouTube - Authorities- Acthung
Dr. Know - early 80's Nardcore from Oxnard CA...NOFX owes EVERYTHING to these guys
YouTube - Dr. Know - These pressures
Youth Of Today - mid to late 80's NYC hardcore (via Connecticut)....discovered by Kevin Seconds of 7 Seconds fame
YouTube - Youth Of Today - Stabbed In The Back
Shelter - 90's hardcore or Krishnacore....basically members of Youth Of Today after becoming Krishna devotees...it seems that EVERY hardcore band from the east coast during the 90's at some point was a member of this band
YouTube - Shelter - Revealed in reflection
Negative Approach - early 80's hardcore form Detroit....very underrated band
YouTube - Negative Approach - Nothing
Battalion Of Saints - early 80's from San Diego...
YouTube - Battalion of saints - No more lies
VOID - Maryland hardcore from the early 80's....possibly the greatest bands ever on Dischord Records
YouTube - VOID - Condensed Flesh *4:50 'Get Out Of My Way"

LoathsomePete 09-09-2010 03:56 PM

I'm after some more of the progressive punk/jazzcore bands like NoMeansNo and Victim's Family. Anybody have any recommendations?

bob. 09-09-2010 04:13 PM

i don't think anybody sounds like NoMeansNo

have you heard alice donut?
YouTube - Alice Donut - Untidy Suicides

also The Hanson Brothers (which is literally all of NoMeansNo with a different lead singer and more conventional punk rock)
YouTube - THE HANSON BROTHERS - Comatose.wmv

I'm not sure how well they fit in with what you want but I recommend Dazzling Killmen for jazzy hardcore.

bob. 09-09-2010 04:16 PM

oh yeah Dazzling Killmen are like Black Flag fused with Sun-Ra

While Alice Donut wasn't really the sound I was after, I will definitely be looking up some stuff by them because that song you posted was pretty good.

As far as The Hanson Brothers are concerned, I've been aware of them since I found NoMeansNo, but their music just doesn't grab me in the same way. I was never really too big into the Ramones and their influence on The Hanson Brothers is pretty significant. Also their music is a little too Canadian for me. While I'm proud to be a Canadian, I don't really need that to ring out in my music.

I appreciate the prompt response though and will definitely look up some Alice Donut.

Definitely more along the lines of what I was looking for musically, but I'm not sold on the vocalist. Sorry for sounding a little fussy but hardcore punk vocals never really did anything for me, and this is no exception. Still I might look up one of their CD's based on the melody alone. Thanks :)

bob. 09-09-2010 05:59 PM

another band that is sort of "fringe" punk rock is Cows
YouTube - Cows - Sugar Torch (Video)

their later albums like Cunning Stunts and Sexy Pee Story.,..remind me of a less sarcastic NoMeansNO

Sansa Stark 09-09-2010 07:13 PM

Not EXACTLY what you're looking for but you miiiiiiiiiiiight like it

I think Tora! Tora! Torrance! would be something to look at. They're newer and the lead singers voice can get abit irritating... but- all together I like them.

Husker Du maybe... another great Punk band from the MN scene.

MDietrich 12-09-2010 04:30 PM

Anyone know of music similar to X Ray Spex and Penetration (female fronted)?

musicsnob 12-09-2010 11:05 PM

I'm stuck on The Slits - Cut.
I downloaded all of the bands who got big from the roxy just hoping to find another band as good as them.
Does anyone know anything similar to this great band?
Thanks
