The Pogues
Well, I know that the music really dosen't belong to the Punk Forum, it is more folk or irish dance folk, but I think that the lyrics and jokes are of a punky nature...so after much deliberation, I decided to put the thread here.
I LOVE the Pogues, if you have never heard them, you will get one hell of a laugh, and it is kinda a pick me up sometimes.... To those who already know and like them, rock on! :band: |
The Pogues are awsome. Best song is Turkish Song of The Dammed. Definetly one of my favorite irish flavored punk bands. If you dont know yet the pogues were originally pogues mahone and they put out some stuff under that name too that is super good too. I really like that band.

cool, thanx for the tip!~
Acctually thank you. When I read this I was having a pretty lousy day then I remembered how good the pogues were and put in a couple cds. After Rum Sodomy, and The lash" and "If I should fall from grace with god" playing back and forth on random for an hour my night turned very well. With that said as an addition to my favorites pogues songs I have to add
Down in the ground where the dead men go If I should fall from grace with god Dark streets of london Billy Bones House of the gods |
how about Fairy Tales of New York and Irish Drinking song?
did you know that the Dropkick Murphy's did a rendition of that too, very good I might add.... |
I think like, four hundred bands did Irish Drinking Song
Or just four from what I've heard.
Hey Anarchy, this does belong in the punk forum mate.....Im Irish and they're regarded as one of punks greats here in Dublin anyway. Fair play, they're great stuff and McGowan is a brilliant lyricist.
Yeah...I have always had a thing for an irish accent...very sexy...lol!
They're okay for being irish/scottish/whatever punk
The Pogues
Sort of like Punk with mandolin's. I'll up some later.
Okay you've been here long enough to know how to use the search button. Also stop posting threads in general music if you know its punk then post it in the punk forum.
They're not really Punk, they have a good deal of Irish Folk and traditional dance. I just assumed there wouldn't be anything about them, since they're so obscure in America, where most of the users on here are from.
Oh fuck off, the Pogues were considered a punk band before you were even a stain on your dads sheets.

Not to be a stickler, but AMG doesn't even have them as punk. But anyway, anyone have any comments on the band? |
Your beloved wikipedia under genre has punk rock and they're tagged as punk on last.fm.
I think they're strongly influenced by punk but they don't really belong in the punk forum. Which is why I put them in general. They can't really be categorized.

If the Pogues are not considered a punk band , then I guess we'll have to stick all the Clash threads into the reggae forum.
how about we just classify them as "****ing awesome"?
The Pogues are punk the way Elvis Costello was punk - not sounding exactly the way we think punk should sound, but in the same spirit. Besides Shane McGowan was in a punk band before, the Pogues were part of the post-punk era anyways with PiL & Joy Division & the trad. Irish music they play is performed from the perspective of a punk band.

I tend to use my ears
Dare I say that i'm not their biggest fan. I have a BEST OF and that will do me . It's riotous fun, just not my sort of riotous fun.

Yeah I still use my ears for online arguments. See unlike some people I know how to argue without jumping around and switching up points so I don't need to rely on wikipedia and allmusic.

Is there any point arguing if you're just going to state what you think hear? There's really no point arguing genre's at all really.

As for the Pogues, it's kind of funny because I claim to be a fan of their sound but most of my individual favorites are songs that they branched out with. Here are songs that I think deserve mention: Thousands Are Sailing from If I Should Fall from Grace with God Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six, also from If I Should Fall from Grace with God Lorca's Novena from Hell's Ditch USA from Peace and Love If I extended this list to include more characteristic favorites, it'd probably be three fifths of their repertoire. So I won't. |

Co-incidentally (and all genre/music-theory madness aside), I am off to see the devils tomorrow night in San Diego...promises to be a good time from what I have heard....has anyone seen their shows? This is a first for me.
