Interesting start with the Butthole Surfers pick but I've got a broad classification for punk too and I love them.

A band that's pretty much essential.
Black Flag - Depression

Something a little newer.
Modern Life is War - D.E.A.D.R.A.M.O.N.E.S.

and a few more
Hot Snakes - No Hands

Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today

Ah Police Truck, always was my fav DK song.

I don't listen to hardcore much anymore, however it served as the genre that initially got me seriously interested in music back in the day and I spent a lot of my early teenage years loving it. Here's some old favourites from memory:

Negative Approach - Nothing

JFA - Beach Blanket Bongout

I'd have to agree Start Today is their best song but this is one of my favorites.

I always thought I'm Not A Punk was one of the weakest songs off of Milo Goes To College.

It's one of the first songs I ever heard by them and I still love it for that but it's certainly one of the album's lesser tracks.

Some more modern favorites of mine...

Yeah, some of them are a little bit a of a stretch but whatever. I don't really care for modern hardcore bands that try to copy/replicate the sound of the 80's.

Yeah I think modern bands who try to "revive" hardcore of the 80s by just mimicking it is pretty lame. I'm no any modern hardcore bands although there's a handful of modern Post-Hardcore I like. Comeback kid is actually playing here in a couple weeks with Set Your Goals but I'm not into them and I the front man of Set Your Goals is a douche.

Yeah, Set Your Goals are crap. They try to unsuccessfully put powerpop to hardcore punk tempos and it doesn't work one bit. Just sounds like a mouse suffering in a fan.
