I'm not laboring under delusions that music isn't about making money, but the way in which he promoted and commodified the Sex Pistols into a consumer-driven movement is demeaning and embarrassing to musicians everywhere. Especially considering the canonization of shitheads like Sid Vicious, who did absolutely fuck all with his life and is now revered for it.

So yeah, Malky's gone? Can't say I give a shit.

^Sid Vicious "canonized"? I didn't think so, the guy was a f_ck up of the first order, and MacLaren's biggest f_ck up with the Pistols. Yea, Alex Cox made a movie about him, "Sid and Nancy", but it only solidified what a basket case Sid was.

And how AWESOME Gary Oldman is.

Actually the movie really sucked, but the soundtrack is awesome.

That being said, Sub-Mission is a great song, but the Sex Pistols were otherwise pretty lame, and Bow Wow Wow for that matter too.
The story of the Sex Pistols was pretty interesting to me when I was a kid though, but after the initial "WOW THIS IS AWESOME", the other bands from that scene were obviously much more listenable.

All this talk of 'the godfather of punk' crap I've heard over the past couple of days is seriously nauseating.

He didn't do anything. His 'legacy' in punk has been far too overstated, mostly by himself. Just because he's dead doesn't mean I have to buy it as truth.

Don't get me wrong he could cause a good publicity stunt and get people talking about it. But that's about as far as what he could do with them. The actual music itself he had nothing to do with. And if he did try and get involved with it Lydon would either tell him to fuck off or do it in a way to piss McLaren off. That's the small detail people seem to forget when they call the Sex Pistols McLaren's boyband.

The music industry needs people like him to make it interesting. That doesn't mean I have to like him.

That must be a Brit thing because I haven't heard shit. I only heard that he died today.
In the US the death of a Ramone barely gets reported.

Like..your local independent newspaper?
Of course these deaths get mentioned in the press a little bit - like any celebrity. But it's certainly not big news. Everybody only really seems to care about which drug combo or disease did 'em in.
Then again, I have no heroes and I don't pay much attention to the news so maybe I'm wrong.

I agree that I never heard much press calling him the godfather of punk or whatever, but his death was still reported on cnn.com.

Nope, our main newspaper. Maybe there are fans on the staff though.
