Graves or Danzig (based on Misfits material)

just based on their time with The Misfits, who do you prefer?

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 03-17-2010 02:07 AM

Janszoon 03-17-2010 08:02 AM

Whether you like his voice or whatever it's pretty hard to compare a hired gun imitator favorably to the person who was the major creative force in the band.

+81 03-18-2010 11:48 PM

People need to lay off Graves. I too prefer the Danzig era material but the Misfits still made some great, catchy, albums with Graves. The hate should be focused toward Jerry Only if anyone.

Odyshape 03-19-2010 05:09 AM

After watching a few interviews of Glenn I almost want to vote for Graves, I swear Danzig embodies everything I could possibly hate.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 03-19-2010 05:45 PM

yeah hes a douche but he made better music

Here's the truth!

hitman976 03-20-2010 01:01 PM

Depends on what you're looking for...

Danzig and Jerry Only, ARE, and will forever BE, The Misfits. But I really like Graves' voice... always have. I think American Psycho and Famous Monsters are both really good albums (and the production value is better -- if that's what you're looking for). But, traditional Misfits fans will always be indifferent to (or unimpressed with) "life after Danzig." To each his own...

Janszoon 03-20-2010 01:39 PM

Why would I want better production value on a Misfits album?

tgpo 03-20-2010 07:39 PM

I'm glad Danzig broke them up when he did. They were becoming less of a punk band and more of a gothic metal band by the end, which makes sense since they had to supplement material Danzig had written for his solo project to make LP length.

Static Age still stands as my favorite Misfits album, but even their worst Danzig album is better than their best Graves album. And them not releasing an album is better than their best Only album.

In what way do you feel they were becoming a gothic metal band? Earth AD just sounds like hardcore to me, nothing particularly gothic about it. In fact I'd actually go as far as saying it's more stripped down sounding than their previous work.

LOL those were word-for-word my exact thoughts when I saw the thread title.

I had that same question. Earth AD is certainly hardcore punk. Maybe there's some validity to the notion that Misfits had become 'more metal' than previously and that they were 'goth' but to me that does not = Gothic Metal.

tgpo 03-24-2010 05:35 AM

We'll probably have to chalk this up to semantics and personal definitions of genres, but I'll try and explain it anyway.

The Goth part should be self explanatory. They sang about death, and had a liberal use of skulls, etc.

I hear Metal all over Earth A.D. Primarily, Hellhound, Demonomania, and Devilock. To my ears, those are Metal tracks. Granted, I subscribe to the group who thinks Black Flag stopped being a punk band when idiot Rollins joined, so I'm already in the minority.

For me the goth part is the part that actually isn't self-explanatory. I guess I can sort of hear a slight metallic edge to the music (though not really what was considered metal in 1983) so I can understand that comparison a little. But singing about death and a liberal use of skulls are staples of metal not goth, especially not goth as it was in 1983. I have a hard time seeing any overlap whatsoever between the Misfits image and sound and that of contemporaneous goth bands like Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bauhaus or the Cure.

tgpo 03-24-2010 07:19 AM

Let's back track and see if we can find common ground first.

Do you consider The Damned to be a goth band?

Honestly, I'm not familiar enough with their back catalogue to give a very informed answer to this. I will say though, as a someone who was a fan of goth music growing up, when I got around to checking out the Damned I was surprised by how un-gothy (I think I just invented a new word ) their sounds was.

Hrm, this may be harder than I thought.

If you back track too far with The Damned, you'll veer back into their mostly punk beginnings. Check out Phantasmagoria first. I'd say it's their most Gothic offering.

Insane Guest 03-25-2010 01:13 PM

I kind of like Graves more. Danzig was a great run, and introduced them and brought them to life. I don't know why people say that there were no Misfits after Glenn left, maybe it's just me but I like all Misfits songs.

Taytayism27 03-25-2010 03:04 PM

Graves is good, but I prefer Danzig. He sure seems like an ******* from what little Ive been lucky enough to see of him, but I still prefer his time with the Misfits to Graves'.

Yeah I know, it's not really suited for children, the first few seconds would make parents mouths drop.

Alfred 03-25-2010 09:03 PM

Honestly, save for "Halloween", I think "Scream!" with Graves is better than anything they recorded with Danzig.

littlebatty 04-03-2010 02:08 PM

danzig

his voice is superior and sensuous

jack the stripper 04-18-2010 09:22 PM

I'm in love with Danzig.

I would marry him right on the spot of this concert.
Minus the fishnet shirt.

Unrelenting 05-22-2010 08:08 AM

Graves tbh

charliecurlyfry 05-22-2010 08:43 PM

Danzig. I don't know why.. I can't figure it out.. oh, wait.. I know why.. GRAVES SUCKS!!!

American Nightmare 05-29-2010 08:57 PM

I voted for Danzig cause of all the singles, eps and albums they released with him, however Graves has a powerful voice as well, a shame they only released 2 albums (3 if you count Evilive II) with him on vocals

Fixed that for you.

James 05-30-2010 02:59 PM

Danzig obviously Static Age and Walk Among Us are good, The rest aren't.

Also on an unrelated note.......Danzig solo is pretty cool.

Static Age and Walk Among Us are the only good things they've done? I thought you only recently got those albums, have you listened to their other material?
