Favorite Post-Punk Band?
Whats your favorite post-punk band ( i feel as though lots of people will say joy division lol)
My favorite band is Mission of Burma They were the first post-punk i listened to and got into them by my friend from high school who moved to boston and came back with all this cool music bands from boston i never heard of I have all their albums and know each by heart Enough about me, what about you guys? |
Post-Punk is an umbrella term used to describe a vast and varied amount of musicians/bands, it really is too difficult to decide upon one favourite.

Im just thinking about guys like Gang of Four and Joy Division who were literally late 70s and early 80s only |
The only one I really care for is Echo & The Bunnymen... unless post-hardcore counts as post-punk.
|
also the bunnymen, seen them live a couple times, brilliant live band, "see you at the barricades babe"...
|

mine is probably Gang of Four. |
Gang Of Four or Wire
|
Gotta go w/Echo and the Bunnymen. Crocs. and Heaven Up Here most def post-punk.
|
Echo and the Bunnymen is DEFINITELY post punk
but I think they blow Mine would have to be the Comsat Angels or Gang of Four Or maybe Lilliput |

I don't listen to much post-punk, really. But of the bands/albums I've listened to, I'd say Wire. But that's not based on their whole discog of course, as I've only heard the first 3 albums.
|
Been listening to a lot of The Fall lately and am really enjoying their music. Killing Joke has a a decent post-punk sound, but at times they get far too metallic so it's hard to say whether or not they really belong in the genre.
|
I'd be tempted to say PiL, but then i know i'd change my mind five minutes later. There are too many to choose from.
Fuck it, PiL. There. |
I'm not quite sure who would be eligible, but I really like Dinosaur Jr, Fugazi, and The Dead Milkmen. Any of those count?

joy division, is hands down the best, but i love the fall, siouxie and the banshees, gang of four, etc. also i say death cab's narrow stairs is a real solid post-punk album (or at least has some real post-punk influences) |
1. The Fall
I hands down love this band, ever since hearing Grotesque back a couple months I have immersed myself in their music and have never looked back. When you know you have found the pinnacle of music it is so satisfying, and that is how I feel listening to The Fall. 2. Joy Division 3. A toss up between Human Tetris/Motorama, two relatively small Russian post-punk bands. |
Slits raincoats kleenex

How are we gonna define post-punk?Does it have to be just the original batch or can more recent groups who are very much in the style be included?
|
The Cure
|
Echo was good. The Smiths were definitely one of my favorite groups of that era, though they and Jesus and the Mary Chain were arguably a little late compared to Echo & the Bunnymen.
I'm having a difficult time with the "Post-Punk" handle. It encompasses quite a bit. For me, I would consider Fugazi "Post-Punk" because of Ian McKaye's affiliation with the hardcore scene--Teen Idles, Minor Threat, etc--but they don't seem to fit the dynamics of this thread. |
New Order > JD

After Curtis died I believe New Order went on to become a lesser band than they would have been. There is some evidence to suggest the band would have gone in the same, or at least similar direction had Curtis lived and I believe Joy Division would have blown New Order clean out of the water had it worked out that way. |
I like New Order's sound better, but Joy Division is more talented. I agree that they could have gotten better if Ian wouldn't have kicked it. New Order doesn't have half as good as lyrics as Joy Division did, but I don't think Joy Division could have carried off "Ceremony" quite as well as it is as a New Order song, which is important as it's my favorite. I think New Order carried on for far too long though
|
Even so, Joy Division (in their own right) > New Order.
|
In the matter of post punk though
Gang of Four > Joy Division |
Gang of Four don't even come close to Joy Division.
If there's ever a case for most overrated Post Punk band Gang Of Four would walk it. |
no way! gang of four is awesome. joy division is better, but gang of four is awesome
|
I find them boring personally.
They didn't really do anything that Wire or A Certain Ratio hadn't already done better before. One of the things I enjoy most about post punk is the experimentation and the diversity behind it. Gang Of Four lacked both of those. There are much better post punk bands that should be talked about. Lucifer Sam posted about Savage Republic a few days ago, they piss over anything Gang Of Four ever did. |
What about the Comsat Angels? No one's mentioned them I don't think
|
I love Gang of Four, wouldn't say they're overrated in the slightest. The one post punk band I never really saw the BIG appeal in is Echo and the Bunnymen. I mean I think they're OK, but I never feel the urge to put them on.
|
I've seen Sixx A.M classified as post-punk a couple of times... Uh, do they count? If so, they are my favorite post-punk band.

let's see some love for Swans...
i love a lot of stuff that came out of New York during the early eighties, how about a band that never hit their prime until the early nineties and still made headwind with what they were doing at the time? i love the abrasive and atonal works of Cop and Filth, but to tell the truth, it doesn't even begin to approximate the multidimensional depth of Gira and Jarboe's songwriting. |

JD > New Order. |
Post punk bands
The Smiths, then Joy Division, then The Cure. |

Joy Division is my favorite. The Fall are pretty good too. If one would consider Talking Heads post-punk then they would definitely be up there too. |

Good choice! A very underrated band for the genre, in my opinion. |
Felt, Swell Maps and The Pop Group are some of my faves apart from the obvious candidates. There are tons of great Post Punk albums but very few bands were consistent IMO. Wire were immense too.
|
Probably The Cure. Their debut album is by far their best.
