There's never been the slightest thing punk, post or otherwise, about those overblown pop weinies.

Sonic Youth's debut and Confusion is Sex (the first two you mention) are deeply rooted in punk and obviously it's post as it's boundary stretching. They're straight out of Branca and No Wave which is definitive post-punk. And yes, I've heard those records and the fact that you would defend U2 in a 'punk' context while simultaneaously dismissing Sonic Youth seriously destroys your credibility.

I'm sorry but there is no reasonable definition of post-punk that can exclude Television. The only argument I can think of is that they're to early to be 'post' but that makes about as much sense as claiming Sabbath isn't metal.

dont care about credibility. I am old enough to not care about that.

A. Timeline wise, they are near the start of proto.

B. They sound like a classic rock band.

The start of proto-punk was around the mid to late 60s... Television was formed in 1973, and their debut release (which was a single, I think) was 1975. So, they are more in between both the start or proto-punk and the start of post-punk. Hell, if you count their debut album (which was released in 1977), then they are closer to post-punk.

Classic Rock is more of a radio blanket term to define a time in music, not an actual style of music though.

Of course Television can be called post-punk, they release Marquee Moon in '77 as the first-wave was coming to an end. The album's sound takes the punk ethos and builds on it with added musical proficiency, intellectualism and structural complexity. Same applies to Talking Heads.
