Although Nirvana was on a major label at the release of Nevermind the situation was different than most bands on a major label.
If you listen to the interview off the box set, you will find out that Nirvana had a different circumstance, they could eaither take a guaranteed sum of money (like 750,000 bucks) and not have much freedom in what they can play, or they would receive a certain percent of there records sold and maintain almost all freedom of what they could play. In my opinion Nirvana played whatever the hell they wanted to until the end, although Kurt may have been unhappy with In Utero's mixing, the fact they played what they wanted still applies. I see Bleach as a great album, but it's obvious it is far more elementary than there other releases. Nirvana's distorted guitars and kurt's style of singing can really cover up songs at times, songs that cold really be looked at as pop. In Utero, on the other hand, is far darker than Nevermind. |

I don't know if its because the lyrics have more meaning or if they are more clear, for a song like "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seatle" the message kind of just jumped out at me, where in Nevermind you really had to look for meaning as Cobains lyrics were contradictory at times.
I'm not sure if it is because I've heard Nevermind so many times but I'm partial to In Utero. |

Some of them had messages or archs but to me the fragmented, sometimes nonsensical, sometimes cryptic lyrics always deepened the emotional impact of the band. Black Francis was also in my mind a lyrical genius. He took a cryptic approach and still drove it home somehow - I could feel it but i didn't really know/care what I was feeling. |
