  • What Nirvana have even gotten signed without the initial success of Mudhoney at Sub Pop?
I meant for Nirvana and the Pixies. Sorry I didn't specify.

But for your last bullet, I think more time would have been needed for them to be signed to Sub Pop if Mudhoney didn't make much success.

I think Pixies were more influential in their sound. However, you cannot deny Nirvana's influence either, they were a huge catalyst in the rise of alternative to the mainstream.

I think Pixies cavorted more with boundaries, which i'm a sucker for, so i'd have to relucantly say them.

I mean, I say Pixies even though I like both of their music because I love the noise aspects of their music and the anxiety and unease that runs blatantly through their songs. I actually think I would say in a sense, The Pixies songs were much "poppier" - they were generally more upbeat on the surface... just listen to Debaser, that's more of a pop song than most of what I can think of from Nirvana (though I guess it depends what you think of as pop music, because the term encompasses such a huge array of sounds). The best part? I'll get to hear them play it tonight

I actually think the majority of Nirvana's output is really good pop music, pop music that is simply played out with a lot of distortion and angst. Generally they adhered to a simple Verse-chorus structure, utilised hooks effectively and created memorable yet basic melodies. It was presented in the 'alternative' format, sure, but at the base of it all was a very sophisticated pop sensibility. Pixies for me just had a bit more divergence away from convention, which for me makes the music that bit more interesting.

And all i have to end with is YOU LUCKY BAST*RD.

Are you really talking about The Pixies here? Have you heard Black Francis Scream or sing en Espanol? That alone nullifies both of those statements.

yeah i know they play hard but do they play hard every song? nirvana plays 99.8% of all their songs raw. i didnt mean that pixies never play rough songs but they dont play like that all the time such as "here comes your man"

Nirvana had some really poppy songs thrown into the mix too. I think Kim Deal's voice kinda' sweetened up a lot of The Pixies songs.

lol ok then, i feel the same way, thats why i put nirvana songs were 99.8% raw because they have some pretty mellow songs as well. looks like we struck an agreement?
