The Pixies vs Nirvana

To be honest the two really aren't that simular. The execution and directions the bands took were totally different.

I love both bands. Kurt was highly influenced by The Pixies. I perfer what Nirvana did with that influence. The Pixies are still an amazing band though.

He said when he wrote "Smells Like Teen Spirit" that he wrote a "pixies song" and was a little sketchy when they recorded it because it's not the Nirvana type of style. It worked out though. I'm reading this huge book that is like a day by day journal of the band. Some of the things they experienced are quite amazing.

its hard to say because both are different. nirvana was a bit more pop song.

We have all established the Pixies played a huge roll in Nirvana musically but other than that I don't see them as contributing to Kurt Cobains outlook besides the fact of Cobain admitting to ripping off the loud quite technique.
The bands are completely different lyrically and were trying to do two different things with there music.

I get tired of Nirvana and The Pixies getting compared so much just because they were cited as an influence of Nirvana, just because a band is influenced by another band doesn't mean they will sound all that similar, and comparing bands that are completely different from each other is stupid.
For example, Lil Wayne was heavily influenced by Alice In Chains and greatly respects Layne Staley.

In my opinion the closest sounding thing to Nirvana that influenced them Would be Mudhoney or Green River and I think that would be a much better debate.

To debate in regards to Nirvana and Mudhoney? I can think of a few.

What Nirvana would be like without Mudhoney
What would have happened if Nirvana did pick Dan Peters over Dave Grohl
What band ultimately played a bigger role in the sense of being influential to Nirvana; Green River or Mudhoney
What Nirvana have even gotten signed without the initial success of Mudhoney at Sub Pop?
