Nirvana came at the right time for me. I didn't grow up with the Pixies, so they never have affected me as much as Nirvana. In Utero is in my top 5. Pixies are great though, and I do appreciate them, yet I voted "I prefer Nirvana".

If you ask me this today (an uh... you did) I'd say Pixies.
But a decade ago? Nirvana. Discovering Nirvana meant discovering an entirely new direction in music for me - the first band I listened to because -I- discovered them and not because I heard it around home and adopted them from a family member. Without Nirvana I might not have ever gotten to a Pixies album... But yeah, today I don't break out the old Nirvana albums much. Pixies though? All the time. They stuck with my tastes a lot longer so they get it here, if not by much. |

Hoo boy. I imagine it's tough to beat the nostalgia filter for the children of the 90's; we grew up on Nirvana, after all. However, I just barely count as a "child" of the 90's, since I wasn't even a teenager until the Noughties. I was still surrounded by Nevermind, thanks largely to my brother, but I didn't become a music lover until long after the grunge phase of American culture had become a distant and usually embarrassing memory.
Still, I do definitely like Nirvana. However, I honestly believe The Pixies beat them in basically every arena. Diversity? Of course. Originality? Hell yes. Songwriting? Ehh...debatable, but I'm still gonna have to give Black Francis the nod over Kurt Cobain. Good ol' Kurt did have a great ear for melody, though. The only arena I'd say Nirvana beat The Pixies in was emotional resonance, but I was never that in love with "the message" of Nirvana, anyways. Still, Kurt Cobain has a way of getting under your skin which Black Francis never did (not that he ever tried, to be fair). While Nirvana are a very worthy band, I'm definitely going to have to go with The Pixies on this one.

I lead more towards Nirvana because I have this weird childhood and emotional connection with it. But Kim Deal is one of the bass players that inspired me to pick up a bass. So there about the same although I "prefer" Nirvana.

I dun see how this is a fair fight because the bands are So different
but i will choose The Pixies because as good as Nirvana was, their popular because of cobain's death. For example i hold that Foo Fighters is alot better than Nirvana, but David Grohl isn't dead (I know I step on toes there but thats my opinion) |
