Personal Response to Brand New.
:band: (* direct qote, will be followed by " ")
"Sic Tansit Gloria...Glory Fades," by Jesse Lacey; of Brand New is an amazing track on their recent cd Deja Entendu. The song is pure poetry at best!, and the very song that attracted me to the band. The title of the song is a leading pick up into the meaning with in it, with just one word from the title. "Transit" the second word from the title, like a bus 'rural transit' gives a comparisson to travel, and movement or profression. The lyrics start out describing a scene of a party and then progresses into a peer pressure situation. A little differant frome the way we usually hear it. The male figure in the story line, is the one who ends up feeling pressured to have sex. * " A hand moves in the dark to a ziper, hear a boy bracing tight against sheets barley whisper, 'this is so messed up!" I n this line his fears are explained clearly for the first time. Then as the song continues we begin to see things through his eyes. * "No longer cool but a boy in a stich. Unprepared for life full of lies and failing relationships... his stomach turns and he thinks of throwing up, but the body on the bed beckons forward and he starts growing up The fever. The focus. The reason that I had to belive you weren't too hard to sell. Die young and save yourself. The tickle. The taste of...but now it's choking me up. Die young and save yourself, She hits the lights this dosen't seem quite fair despite everything he learned from his friends he dosen't fell so prepared" I think Jesse Lacey, breaks a certain stereo type we seem to have over who gets nervous the first time and who feels presured. The "transition" taking place is the complication of love and life as you grow, as you become older with age. The description is simple, love isn't the same as you thought it was. When you cross that line, after that everything changes. You try so hard to please that other person, and you give in to what they feel they need even at the cost of losing yourself. Emotion is so intense, * "The fever" 'the lack of focus', how you can become so blindsided. Your friends brag and give you advice. You want to look cool in their eyes, but no matter what you hear when you're there; actually there, and not where you wanted to beor ready to be you can't breath. You choke, unprepared. It does feel like at times that you'd be better off dieing young. Not face this, escape all expectations of love before love becomes the lie, and your that person clinging to sheets fightend while you pretend to be okay. Frightend while you learn what it means to grow up.
