Is there really a point to new bands sounding like old bands, I'd rather just take the old ****, and the new **** that doesn't sound anything like the old **** but is still good, so I can listen to Minor Threat and Converge and it's still all hardcore to me.

Punk was in response to a lot of things, but I don't think the entire punk movement was sophisticated or organized enough to even consider itself, at the time, a response to prog rock. Maybe in hindsight, but certainly not at the time.
