Default Death (Detroit proto punk band)

"Brothers David, Bobby and Dannis Hackney started making music together in 1971, when David, the eldest, was 19 and Dannis, the youngest, was 16. Like many young African-American musicians, our primary influences were soul and funk music. This changed after seeing Iggy And The Stooges live. We started listening to more rock, stuff like Alice Cooper and Led Zeppelin. When the Who's Quadrophenia came out, David became convinced that nothing was more important than rock and roll. In 1974, we put together a demo tape with the most rocking name we could think of: DEATH."

"For the Whole World to See, engineered by Jim Vitti (Parliament/Funkadelic), is being reissued by Drag City."

Clicky the picture for the album, but let's not tell the mods...:psst:

I'm on the second song. These guys are fucking great! I can't believe I've never heard of them before, they certainly deserve more recognition. On top of all that, I really like the design of the album cover too.

Yeah it is pretty rockin', some of the tracks sound like they could've been recorded yesterday, not 35 freakin' years ago. It's unfortunate that they didn't put out more stuff. Two of the members went on to do reggae and I can't find out what happened to the eldest and band leader who apparently pushed them into rock in the first place...:\

And I love the cover too, I think it was designed by the son of one of the original members, who also put together a band and is performing his father's material.

Definitely. Especially true of the second song "Rock". So is this album all they ever put out as far as you know?

Yeah. Only apparently it was never actually released until now due to some disputes regarding the name, which makes the album title rather ironic.

I imagine this Death is better than the prog metal band.

Hah, that's why I put the description in the thread title, the other Death seems to be rather popular among metal heads...
