People being baffled at the prospect of an artist being overrated is usually a good sign of that artist being overrated.

Just because (as a band) you are so damn talented that you can ape pretty much any musical style - doesn't mean you should on every album. Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon and Bring Back that Leroy Brown being 2 prime examples of Queen songs I can't stand.

The Beatles reached their potential and did great ****. Queen were a band who could never live up to Freddie Mercury. The other members of the band were simply not on Freddie's level and so musically they were a boring version of what they could have been had the band been better.

Some of my fave Queen songs were not written by Freddie. Take a look at Queen's discography and who wrote what. You'll be more than surprised.

Not really. Without Freddy as a lynchpin to build upon their sound they'd have been a decent band. The only reason they had any real success as songwriters who sounded any different from any number of pomp rock bands was because they had Freddie to launch them to another level. I don't even dislike Queen, but without Freddie they become just some decent 70s band like Styx. With any other singer do you think "Bohemian Rhapsody" could have been a song of any particular note? Or would it have been a curio of its time that would probably have never been attempted because the good singer they'd have had could never have pulled it off?
