Well I'm not a Marley fan so they're both bad but at least Marley didn't inspire hate and crime.

Astronomer 11-10-2008 05:25 PM

Yeah you're right... you can't really compare when Marley was trying to send out messages of peace and justice while all that ganster rap is just hateful and angry and glamorizing crime.

Punk is a classification of all music that fights for the minority...which is slowly become popular. Where the music comes from...doesn't matter. It's pointing out the obvious...evolution. A few current punk bands I listen too are Crass/NOFX/Op IVY.

Before you jump the gun, and get on my case about these bands not being punk, realize, that maybe these are the first 3 that came to mind.

Alfred 11-10-2008 05:53 PM

For their sound, there's a lot better out there than NOFX.

FaSho 11-10-2008 06:00 PM

Operation Ivy aren't current, or good for that matter.

technoxtc 11-11-2008 03:12 PM

i dont know, it just pisses me off when i go downtown everyday on my way to work in atlanta, and people stay in packs (they are never by themselves) on the sidewalk (they happen to be black) and stare at you if you arent black and they play loud music and stand there all day.. and im a paramedic so i pass by them 24/7 on my 24-48 hours shifts. and they never move.

thats their definition of "gangster", "hard to live on the streets", "the streets are rough", most all of gangster rap is centerd around that main idea.

or atleast the wanna be's which is 95% of them.

Brad Stengel 11-11-2008 03:40 PM

Ummmm.....

What?

turboduck17 11-11-2008 05:24 PM

where did rap come from?

and i think punk has a specific message from the minority, like what props said. If you dont like it thats fine. but what i say is what the music is about doesnt matter, you should listen to how it sounds first, then look into what its all about

FaSho 11-11-2008 05:27 PM

Agreed. I could care less what the music's about as long as it is good. Meaning just gives it bonus points.

turboduck17 11-11-2008 05:31 PM

exactly my point.

Some of it perhaps, while some of reggae Im sure glorifies crime as well.

If you look at the two examples given, "Fuck the Police" and "I Shot the Sheriff", is there anything specifically in NWA's lyrics that imply that they are trying to get people to kill cops anymore than Bob Marley is? If you simply read the lyrics to the two songs, they both have the same message, it's like Marley said, justice. The oppressed rising up and overtaking the oppressors (sp?).

And why should killing a cop be any more offensive than killing anyone else? That's ridiculous.

FaSho 11-11-2008 06:00 PM

This is a pointless morality arguement. People have different sets of morals, so people will think different things, and no matter how much you argue with them it won't change.

I personally see nothing wrong with singing about murder. Singing is about passion, so if your passionate about murder, ****ing sing about it!

Brad Stengel 11-11-2008 06:05 PM

I concur. All I'm saying is that if someone's going to go out of their way to say gangster rap is offensive because they don't like it or think it's stupid or whatever, then they can look back at all the music they like, realize what it all means and delete the dozens of songs they've never realized had the same message, albeit in more vague terms.

Although, personally I feel getting offended over anything that isn't both personal and specific is ridiculous.

Ok I kind of started this whole thing SO:

I am in no way offended by such music, I just find it stupid, immature, and hate the fact that we're pushing such violence on to our children and our society. I'm not sure what the difference is between what Marley did and what Rap does but one inspires violence and the other, not so much. I don't think all rap is bad, I just think people shouldn't freak out when other people say they dislike NWA (and others) for their message. I'm gonna go make a thread about this though and leave the punk thread in peace.

Police brutality and racism inspired NWA's songs. That's not cool either. Police brutality actually hurts the police more than anything because then you get songs like Police Story, **** the Police, Cop Killer, Pat Brown....

This stuff is not created in a vacuum. Rap, like punk, reggae and all rebel music, is an expression of pent-up outrage.

True, plus it's not like they are saying that all cops are bad, it's more of the general topic.

That ended almost as soon as it began. I'd say "punk" now just refers to certain groups of bands that are agreed-upon, with extremely fuzzy boundaries, by whatever circle of discussion you're in. Any attempt to formalize what punk is, in terms of sound, basically devolves into "I know it when I hear it."

Whether a band is punk or not is really one of the most pointless and fruitless debates in music discussions. Punk is a lot like "dream pop" or "noise-rock"....it doesn't mean anything concrete, the labels are applied arbitrarily based on each person's feelings and it's really all just pop and rock.

Good man.

strappy 11-20-2008 11:15 AM

Punk is an attitude, not a genre.

Amen

FaSho 11-26-2008 08:07 PM

Punk is definatley a genre.

Television (thats the big one)
The Only Ones
Talking Heads

Pere Ubu
The Voidoids
etc..

Alot of these are also considered 'post-punk' but they all made worthwhile records between '75-'78, before 'post-punk' was really considered a genre.

And theres SO MUCH relateability and emotion in punk rock. "Teenage Kicks" by the Undertones, "Time" by Richard Hell, "Ever Fallen in Love" by the Buzz ****s, "You Cant Put Your Arms Around a Memory" by Johnny Thunders, "I'm Straight" by The Modern Lovers, I relate to punk more than any other genre! Im not a rebel by any stretch either.

I agree with what your saying sort of, if youre referring to the whole sex pistols rip off side of it, where it was about bashing out chords and screaming about how your parents made you clean your room, but theres so much great stuff that goes far beyond that. Lets not forget, although technically Elvis Costello was 'pub-rock', he fit right into the punk scene at the time.

I agree but sometimes i feel like punk just fits certain aspects of life so for me the genre is not overrated it's just not always going to be apart of some playlists

PinkCigarette 03-15-2009 12:57 PM

I don't mind punk in small doses. Too much of it hurts my head.

GravitySlips 03-15-2009 01:24 PM

i dunno.

post punk is good, in my eyes in my eyes.

Surell 03-15-2009 02:19 PM

Damn man, this is still here? Is the topic still about whether Punk sucks or not? Hell, what was the topic in the first place?
