The Dogmatics were heavily influenced by The Clash, you can tell that just by listening to them. The Clash have a lot of rock and roll and alternative as well.

Just two examples the rest of your list was pretty solid.

I apoligize. I didn't mean half. I just read The Jam, and was like wtf?

The only sticking point being that the punks hated The Jam and would regually beat up their fans.

I suppose, I'm so into punk though that I can tell minute differences and feel like The Jam are completely different than the Sex Pistols, much poppier I find.

I surprised you know The Dogmatics, they're pretty unknown. My dad worked with one of the twins. I find 'Thayer St. one of the best songs of the 80's. Come to think of it they do sound alot like the Clash, but not in the sense that they're ripping them off or anything like some bands *cough*Rancid*cough*.

Alfred 11-04-2008 04:18 PM

I used to love Rancid.

FaSho 11-04-2008 05:35 PM

I used to like 'Ruby Soho', then I realized, "Hey! Theres this band called The Clash, they sound just like Rancid! Oh wait...they were before them? Huh. Wait....all their songs are better than them and more original and well written? Wow! Why did I waste time listening to Ruby Soho when I could have listened to London Calling?!?"

Alfred 11-04-2008 06:20 PM

Rancid aren't original, and they're trying too hard to be punk.

And yes, The Clash were much more passionate and authentic than Rancid can ever hope to be. Why have a silly ripoff band, just because they're modern, when you can have the real thing?

Haha, yeah...the Clash is way cooler.
By the way, Did some newer band cover Rock the Casbah because I heard a different version a couple times and it is in my opinion very different from the original.

Edit:
I found it, Green Day covered it. Wow, they are about as punk as Motley Crue, haha

Check out Rachid Taha's version of it...

I don't think I have enough posts to put a link on here, so just type it in Youtube.

Something for kate did a pretty good version...
oh wait, no one outside of australia knows who they are...because we suck

Astronomer 11-05-2008 08:32 PM

I like Something for Kate. But I'm one of those sucky Australians.

Anyway. I'm not a punk fan and think most of it is three asterisks and not a very skillful genre of music... but this is because as far as I'm concerned punk first started as a rebellion by the working class, taking a stand against high art and high culture. When punk first evolved it was about the fact that anyone could pick up a guitar and play three chords and rock out and rebel and take a stand... well that's what I think anyway.

Anteater 11-05-2008 10:19 PM

Lulz lateralus, and that's why I find post-punk so ironic. Punk itself aided in a big way to the big art rock/prog. rock stomp-out in the mid to late 70's, yet quite a few of the post-punk bands that emerged early on incorporated progressive tendencies to a point. Talk about a facepalm moment.

Cardiacs =punk/prog= oxymoron

(and yet it worked!!!)

Astronomer 11-05-2008 10:50 PM

Well contradictions and paradoxes always work best.

its not really a contradiction
if punk = rebellion
rebellion from punk is the most punk thing you can do!

Brad Stengel 11-06-2008 09:34 AM

People who don't like punk tend to veiw it more as a political statement than a musical one.

All it was doing was going back to roots rock n' roll, so if anyone's going to go ahead and call it talentless, you can say the same for all the 50's rock and roll and 60's british invasion stuff.

But of course none of that EVER gets called talentless for being simple music.

dac 11-07-2008 01:42 AM

I'm not big on punk, and it's probably for the same reason I'm not much into metal. I'm just not that angry of a person so it's really hard to connect with the music sometimes, so I totally understand why people don't like it.

Xtra 11-07-2008 02:48 AM

Not all punk is angry, and it branches out into many forms.

Piss Me Off 11-07-2008 06:40 AM

I'm not an angry person at all but i love it. The reason people might initially not like it is because it's a style based on trying to be different to everything else to the extent of nearly (and sometimes being) confrontational. Your average Joe doesn't like that sort of thing, just like men wearing make-up was such a big deal in glam and why people got upset the longer the Beatles and Stones' hair got in the 60's.

I like you dac so I'm really not meaning to be offensive, but that is so ****ing closeminded, and anyone not completley ignorant to punk as a genre would know that "angry punk" is just a bad stereotype.

The term angry was geared more towards the metal part of that comment, but I just can't get into that "punk state of mind," i guess. The whole "fight the man," "do what i want" mentality. It's just not for me. I'm not hating on punk though, I definitely see it's appeal. It just doesn't appeal to me.

Brad Stengel 11-07-2008 02:02 PM

Most of the punk I listen to isn't angry at all. All the great punk bands that I enjoy tend to be of the artier, or classic pop-punk type, like The Buzz****s, Wire, or Television.

You can still have an appreciation for music and not like certain genres. I appreciate music, and music is a huge part of my life. But I don't like punk. I don't think it's very good. It's a total matter of opinion.

Brad Stengel 11-10-2008 09:21 AM

The older I get the more I realize that every genre has their fair share of crap, and excellence. Even country, which is frequently hated on, if you know where to find it, there's some great music. Personally, there are genres that I don't listen to, but I'll never say that they're bad, because for all I know I could pick up 'Kind of Blue' in a year and a half, and all of a sudden jazz could click for me.

Never dismiss an entire genre, chances are, you're just going to miss out on great stuff.

dac 11-10-2008 11:09 AM

I dismiss "gangster" rap. I refuse to embrace music that pushes the issues it does.

GravitySlips 11-10-2008 11:32 AM

Gangster rap is a source of much amusement to me. I like quite a bit of it. Don't take it so seriously!

strappy 11-10-2008 11:34 AM

Yeah, Ice T said Gangsta will either make youlaugh or scare the hell out of you.

I saw a bumper sticker that I totally agree with about what punk is:

Punks Not Dead. It just sucks now.

Yes but the people that make gangster rap DO take it seriously. It's not Weird Al out there making those songs about killing people and doing illegal narcotics, it's real people that have a real influence on society (Thanks MTV!).

That's why most gangster rap sucks now. Fools think they're prophets for selling crack.

NWA was funny.
Ice Cube, Dre: hilarious
Ghetto Boys: ditto

Lately, gangsta don't make me laugh. it makes me YAWN. It's like you have to have the IQ of a woodscrew in order to get signed.

It has a lot to do with one talented rapper making it big and then he brings on all his no-talent buddies. Think 50cent (eminem's protege). He brings all these knucleheads that confuse being hard with not having a sense of humor.

dac 11-10-2008 02:26 PM

NWA's songs inspired violence against police officers... NOT FUNNY

FaSho 11-10-2008 02:27 PM

On the other hand police harassment inspired NWA's songs.

I think this arguement is hilarious. The whole "morality" of Nwa, and gangsta rap in general is such apointless arguement.

Right about now NWA court is in full effect.
Judge Dre presiding in the case of NWA versus the police department.
Prosecuting attourneys are MC Ren Ice Cube and Eazy mutha****in E.
Order order order. Ice Cube take the mutha****in stand.
Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth
and nothin but the truth so help your black ass?

Why don't you tell everybody what the **** you gotta say?

**** tha police
Comin straight from the underground
Young nigga got it bad cuz I'm brown
And not the other color so police think
They have the authority to kill a minority

**** that ****, cuz I ain't tha one
For a punk mutha****a with a badge and a gun
To be beatin on, and throwin in jail
We could go toe to toe in the middle of a cell

****in with me cuz I'm a teenager
With a little bit of gold and a pager
Searchin my car, lookin for the product
Thinkin every nigga is sellin narcotics

You'd rather see me in the pen
Then me and Lorenzo rollin in the Benzo
Beat tha police outta shape
And when I'm finished, bring the yellow tape
To tape off the scene of the slaughter
Still can't swallow bread and water

I don't know if they ***s or what
Search a nigga down and grabbin his nuts
And on the other hand, without a gun they can't get none
But don't let it be a black and a white one
Cuz they slam ya down to the street top
Black police showin out for the white cop

Ice Cube will swarm
On any mutha****a in a blue uniform
Just cuz I'm from the CPT, punk police are afraid of me
A young nigga on a warpath
And when I'm finished, it's gonna be a bloodbath
Of cops, dyin in LA
Yo Dre, I got somethin to say

**** the police (4X)

M. C. Ren, will you please give your testimony to the jury about this ****ed up incident.>

**** tha police and Ren said it with authority
because the niggaz on the street is a majority.
A gang, is with whoever I'm stepping
and the mother****in' weapon
is kept in a stash box, for the so-called law
wishin' Ren was a nigga that they never saw

Lights start flashin behind me
But they're scared of a nigga so they mace me to blind me
But that **** don't work, I just laugh
Because it gives em a hint not to step in my path

To the police I'm sayin **** you punk
Readin my rights and ****, it's all junk
Pullin out a silly club, so you stand
With a fake assed badge and a gun in your hand

But take off the gun so you can see what's up
And we'll go at it punk, I'ma **** you up

Make ya think I'm a kick your ass
But drop your gat, and Ren's gonna blast
I'm sneaky as **** when it comes to crime
But I'm a smoke em now, and not next time

Smoke any mutha****a that sweats me
Or any assho that threatens me
I'm a sniper with a hell of a scope
Takin out a cop or two, they can't cope with me

The mutha****in villian that's mad
With potential to get bad as ****
So I'm a turn it around
Put in my clip, yo, and this is the sound
Ya, somethin like that, but it all depends on the size of the gat

Takin out a police would make my day
But a nigga like Ren don't give a **** to say

**** the police (4X)

Police, open now. We have a warrant for Eazy-E's arrest.
Get down and put your hands up where I can see em.
Just shut the **** up and get your mutha****in ass on the floor.
[huh?]>

and tell the jury how you feel abou this bull****.>

I'm tired of the mutha****in jackin
Sweatin my gang while I'm chillin in the shackin
Shining tha light in my face, and for what
Maybe it's because I kick so much butt

I kick ass, or maybe cuz I blast
On a stupid assed nigga when I'm playin with the trigga
Of any Uzi or an AK
Cuz the police always got somethin stupid to say

They put up my picture with silence
Cuz my identity by itself causes violence
The E with the criminal behavior
Yeah, I'm a gansta, but still I got flavor

Without a gun and a badge, what do ya got?
A sucka in a uniform waitin to get shot,
By me, or another nigga.
and with a gat it don't matter if he's smarter or bigger
[MC Ren: Sidle him, kid, he's from the old school, fool]

And as you all know, E's here to rule
Whenever I'm rollin, keep lookin in the mirror
And there's no cue, yo, so I can hear a
Dumb mutha****a with a gun

And if I'm rollin off the 8, he'll be tha one
That I take out, and then get away
And while I'm drivin off laughin
This is what I'll say

**** the police (4X)

The jury has found you guilty of bein a redneck,
whitebread, chicken**** mutha****a.
Wait, that's a lie. That's a goddamn lie.
I want justice! I want justice!

Quote:

I shot the sheriff
But I didnt shoot no deputy, oh no! oh!
I shot the sheriff
But I didnt shoot no deputy, ooh, ooh, oo-ooh.)
Yeah! all around in my home town,
Theyre tryin to track me down;
They say they want to bring me in guilty
For the killing of a deputy,
For the life of a deputy.
But I say:

Oh, now, now. oh!
(I shot the sheriff.) - the sheriff.
(but I swear it was in selfdefence.)
Oh, no! (ooh, ooh, oo-oh) yeah!
I say: I shot the sheriff - oh, lord! -
(and they say it is a capital offence.)
Yeah! (ooh, ooh, oo-oh) yeah!

Sheriff john brown always hated me,
For what, I dont know:
Every time I plant a seed,
He said kill it before it grow -
He said kill them before they grow.
And so:

Read it in the news:
(I shot the sheriff.) oh, lord!
(but I swear it was in self-defence.)
Where was the deputy? (oo-oo-oh)
I say: I shot the sheriff,
But I swear it was in selfdefence. (oo-oh) yeah!

Freedom came my way one day
And I started out of town, yeah!
All of a sudden I saw sheriff john brown
Aiming to shoot me down,
So I shot - I shot - I shot him down and I say:
If I am guilty I will pay.

(I shot the sheriff,)
But I say (but I didnt shoot no deputy),
I didnt shoot no deputy (oh, no-oh), oh no!
(I shot the sheriff.) i did!
But I didnt shoot no deputy. oh! (oo-oo-ooh)

Reflexes had got the better of me
And what is to be must be:
Every day the bucket a-go a well,
One day the bottom a-go drop out,
One day the bottom a-go drop out.
I say:

I - I - I - I shot the sheriff.
Lord, I didnt shot the deputy. yeah!
I - I (shot the sheriff) -
But I didnt shoot no deputy, yeah! no, yeah

kthedrummer 11-10-2008 03:14 PM

Wasn't punk like a movement. A time and place thing to kill Disco and to take the power away from the record companies and give it back to the fans...Doesn't that make everything past 1987 or so post-punk or something.

Astronomer 11-10-2008 03:26 PM

"I want to say 'I shot the police' but the government would have made a fuss so I said 'I shot the sheriff' instead... but it's the same idea: justice." — Bob Marley

Now you can draw even more similarities!
