devalara, are the stranglers really in the punk genre? they certainly have a unique sound, but im not sure what genre they fit into...anyone know?

I'd say the Stranglers would probably fit in with the punk movement. The Jam wouldn't though. Bunch of mods if ever I saw them.

I'd query Bloc Party being punk. They're a great band but I don't really see much of the punky anger in their music, it's far more celebratory than angry.
The Clash are the benchmark though. Most important punk band ever. |

green day is fine, but they are not punk. but i understand why the youngones think they are. when you look at all the music played on mtv/radio, green day is certainly as punk as it will get. same with blink. bands like casualties and the exploited just look like dirty words to them.

wow! well i dont care if you guys think these bands are ****ing punk or not cause i dont give a **** and im sure they dont either. good charlotte, green day, mest, rancid, simpl plan, minor threat, social d, sex pistols, the clash, evanesece (or however the **** you spell it) but i know 1 thing forsure, avril ****ing lavigne is not ****in' punk. shes the bigest poser and sellout i have ever seen besides crazytown!!!! shes a bitch who thinks shes all that. well sorry bout all that.

I agree she's a posure and I would consider regular pop/rock light rock that is. She may have some talent but not a punker just cause she dresses in black and looks kinda dark in style and sounds angry in some songs. Punk is a rage and statement and anarchy & not giving in and just letting loose. Green day is good because their music is catchy sounding but I think they are more alternative rock/pop sounding to soft for true punk but then again I think placing artist sounds in genres is not always good. Being creative is a personal things and all style can be good at times. Not to sound hypocritically but its more like one person likes is not anothers. :shycouch:

^ sorry but i really dislike people who try and define punk as being anything besides just music. i would like to think that punk is not just about rage and anarchy. but, at the same time, i would also like to think that rap is not always about guns, bitches, and 22 inch rims- though on the outside, it appears that way.
