Ive known lots of edge kids, and Id say about 80% of them are forceful and whiney(sp) when people drink/do drugs around them. This leads to resentment of people who label themselves "straight edge". Alot of them actively seek out kids that drink to fight them.
Which is also dumb because theres always someone whose more edge- who is VEGAN or ABSTINENT or DOESNT USE VOWELS. |

The moment there became a concept of "punk fashion" and "punk style," it largely ceased to be meaningful. It's inherently contradictory for a scene defined by self-expression and individualism to start having implicit rules for how a "punk" should look and act.
I'm not 100% sure this is relevant to the topic, but reading all the posts, there felt to me to be a bit of a sense of some proper punk culture. But I can't isolate exactly why I get that sense. Straight edge doesn't resonate with me (I think the principles are completely arbitrary), but I don't think being straight edge makes you less (or more) punk. I think those who resonated to the original punk ideal of breaking with convention and doing your own thing should be favourable to other breaks with the mainstream. In my experience, though, people who associate closely with punk tend to see metal as the enemy, which is a bit bizarre to me.

wow, thanks guys. my whole life I used to make fun of straight-edge kids, and now as I get older, haven't ever used drugs, don't drink or smoke and to an even more extreme end, don't have casual sex, I must face the fact that I have inadvertently become straight edge. DAMMIT!!!

Anyone who claims someone else isnt punk is a moron. Its like saying "you dont fit into a group, a group whos ideaology is about not being associated with a group". I think punk is awesome and retarted for the exact same reason... it's nearly impossible to be punk, and 99% of all punks are posers. Go watch SLC Punk, it does a pretty good job explaining this.
The only person who can ever really know whether or not your are punk, is you. How could someone else possibly know whether or not your beliefs just happen to coincide with that of a group, or if you just trying to fit it? Last edited by joyboyo53; 08-28-2008 at 01:26 PM. |

in my experience straight edge kids are just stupid and whiny...
and in five years you'll see them passed out on a street corner with a bottle of jack and a soiled condom self denial is just a stupid ideal left over from the catholics.
