imo only sex pistols and the clash are really punk, there are others but most are not mainstream. But if you consider the genre as being much more than just those 2 bands then i guess the following would fit the bill.

Undertones- teenage kicks
buzzcocks- ever fallen in love with someone
the clash- should i stay or should i go
sex pistols- god save the queen
tom robinson- 2-4-6-8 motorway
u2- i will follow
talking heads- psycho killer
rammones- sheena is a punk rocker

yeah, I know their first few releases had a very obvious feel of post-punk. They had an influence from punk, but far removed from actual punk rock.

i just dont think that any of the other punk bands really captured that same feeling the clash and the sex pistols did. The american punk was very different to the punk of the uk and most bands simply used it as a launching pad to get them noticed just like u2 did of course. But if people can say blink 182 are punk then i can say the earliest of u2 are to and even the kinks have a very punk feel even thoguh they predate the punk movement. But i think the most catchy punk song are the punk pop songs just like the ones i listed.

Naw. I love both those bands, but there is a whole world of punk outside of them. Depends on the "feeling" you are refering to...

.. just a few examples, all capture a "feeling".

The Clash and The Sex Pistols are the bands I feel are great lauching pads when first discovering the style, but they are not the be all, end all of the style.

H2O - One Life, One Chance

A bit obscure, but every time I hear it, I can't get it out of my head. Aaaghh! I've done it again.
