Dear god I hope you were joking.

For me, I have to go with The Clash. Their talent and diversity sets them apart from other punk bands. And they have put out the most solid albums overall.

I still love The Ramones. I wish so many people didn't confuse their simplicity with incompetence.

Now The Sex Pistols, they were awful musicians but I don't hold that against them because that's part of their appeal for me. The chaos they created feels very genuine to me, while most other fast paced punk bands just sound samey and routine by comparison.

They were certainly an image first band, and they certainly played the biggest part in turning punk into a fashion trend. But I don't see why that's a really good reason for so many punk fans to hate them, are their favorite hardcore bands nonconformist to a hardcore fashion? With their shaved heads and military shorts? Well of course not.

Just about every significant musical movement ever has a fashion statement to go with it. Classical, country, jazz, rock n roll, the british invasion, psychedelia, reggae, glam rock, funk, disco, punk, new wave, heavy metal, goth rock, hardcore, hip hop, techno, grunge, britpop, indie. That will never change.

What makes The Sex Pistols less image based than The Ramones? Or The Rolling Stones? I think people forget that while McLaren did market the hell out of the band and shaped their image, it was still the band that wrote their own songs, Lydon often clashed with McLaren over the band's direction, so to call them a boy band is a little unfair.
