I feel like The Sex Pistols and Nirvana are two very polarizing bands in those into punk and indie, due to the fact that they're so over-exposed. If the Sex Pistols had flown under the radar, I feel like most hipster-garbage 70's punk fans wouldn't **** all over them NEARLY as much, and in most cases would be fans. The Sex Pistols are just really fast Faces riffs with the singer taking the Lou Reed/Bob Dylan speak-singing style into the next decade, a sort of speak-yelling that defines alot of punk bands worshipped by the same folks who hate on the Pistols.
And I feel the exact same way about Nirvana. If they had only sold as many albums as, say, the Pixies, and not been associated with the whole "grunge" scene, they'd have alot less hipster garbage talking trash about them. But I digress...
Its a tough comparison to make, they're both masters of their craft. The Ramones made great simple pop-punk sounding like sped up Phil Spector records played on trash cans, while the Clash were great at being political yet not sounding dated when I listen to them 30 years later, changing their sound with each album, and making perhaps the most defining post-punk record of all time. I have to say the Clash though, Just because "Safe European Home" is so fantastic.
