And in the 70s when that stuff came out they were the hardest sounding bands around.

Back then bands like Sabbath were the exception , not the rule.

You're looking at this from a 2008 perspective , not from the time they were around.

Uh, care to explain that one? There are quite few characteristics of Rock music that Blues doesn't share besides 'hardness'.
