I actually remember having a similar rant a few years ago. That was back in the days when I was a retard and thought punk was hardcore punk and everything else a silly joke. I still think there's a bit of a discrepancy between the image of punk and the melodic nature of some of it's sub-genres...not sure why but moshing to Social Distortion and/or The Ramones just doesn't look right...:|

if POP means popular, than since the begining, punk music has all been POP - punk, so no it wouldnt be an oxymoron.....
However if it means Avril Lavigne, who's image, (maybe not actuall self) is a contradiction of everything that punk originally stood for, than yes, it is an oxymoron.... Quote:
If people were that influenced by music than they really they shouldnt be doing anyhing but.... And I guarentee, if you were to scower any major city and find a Justin Timberlake fan in their 20's, they would most likely be a fairly smart and educated person with a decent job and good heart.... just because they dont find "AD Breakers" magazine relevant to their pleasent life, does not mean that they are corporate sheep. If anything, I find metal influences way more people than pop music ever could, thats because people who like pop music, arent all that interested in music in general, and how can you blame them when ALL music these days is about 99% image... but thats another discussion for another time.

Isn't that a general definition of the genre though, simple, up-beat music? Not all popular music is "pop".

Yes, and that's precisely my point, however people are approaching it as if "pop" simply meant popular, and that's not the case. Its a viable music style that's independent of a music's accessability or appeal to mainstream audiences. For that matter "punk" is not necessarily synonymous with subversive, and is also a musical style which frequently has a strong pop elements to it, thus making "pop-punk" NOT an oxymoron.
