Black Flag are great, but I really dislike Rollins. I love the anecdote that Ginn gave him LSD because it would make him "not be as much of an asshole."

GravitySlips 03-25-2008 04:05 AM

Greg Ginn was 100x more of an a'sshole than Rollins ever was.

Molecules 03-25-2008 09:48 AM

Fair enough, everyone has pet peeves, but the way I see it Rollins was just a realist. He was surrounded by *******s, though

GravitySlips 03-26-2008 05:43 PM

meh i can't remember. i do know that he ostracized certain other members of the band, he was overly controlling, he fell out with everyone including Rollins and his brother Raymond, he became a pothead who signed any old band to SST records and ruined the label.

as i said i don't remember details but Ginn was a moron, or at least turned into one in the late 80s. That's just my opinion from what I've read about him, obviously I've never met him and I still regard him very highly. A lot of Black Flag fans blame Rollins for the demise of the band and for the change in their sound, but it was primarily the fault of Ginn. I say "fault", but I love post-Damaged 'Flag records, almost all of them anyway. And the band did probably end at the right time, although it woulda been interesting to see where they woulda went.

I can upload some Gone for you if you gimme some time.

jacklovezhimself 04-07-2008 06:22 PM

argh henry rollins is raw.

bottom line.

tjtech12 04-08-2008 05:47 PM

Black Flag was pretty good. That's all I really have to say.

SubPop 04-09-2008 06:57 AM

If any of you black Flag fans want a good read, buy "Get in the Van - On the road with black flag" by Rollins it is a great read, even for people who are not fans of the band.

I saw Rollins do his "Black Flag Show" with the rollins band a few years ago and it was really really good. The dude from Rollins Band on guitar did a 10/10 job of playing Ginns guitar parts. Before the show I thought it was going to be quite good, I walked out totally blown away, Henry was a machine.

respectmyauthoritah420 04-19-2008 02:26 PM

Black Flag is the best hardcore punk band from the 80's. Either them or The Dead Kennedy's

You'd have to add Bad Brains to that. They made less albums, but they endure. Even with the kids today, and the sorry **** they mistake for punk, you still see Bad Brains having the cache they've had with previous generations.

Flag was badass, with Keith Morris. That would be their pinnacle.

Why does everyone say that? Srsly Henry was soo much better and angrier.

baphomet4all 05-24-2008 11:00 AM

strange there isnt a poll attached to this thread about whos better keith or hank.... personally i think hank killed black flag and was always an awful frontman... no singing abilities at all... angry doesnt make someone kool. now keith morris was black flag and after he left the band sukked... just my opinion though. and everyone says this because its true hold nervous breakdown next to tv party and guess what happens you turn nervous breakdown back on...

Well, no hardcore band coming out at that time really cared about the singing ability, I think the angsty and angry guys got the job of frontman no matter how they sang. All the band wanted was to send whatever message they wanted to loud and clear.

Keith Morris is hardly Art Garfunkel either, you know ;)

Keith Morris "was" Black Flag? No no no, Morris didn't write any of the songs, that was Greg Ginn. If anyone ever "was" Black Flag, it was Ginn.

agreed but the frontman always makes or breaks the band which is why i said it was keith. and imo the band blew without him.

Are you saying that these bands were still good without their orignal frontmen?

baphomet4all 05-25-2008 05:28 PM

i have to say ac/dc blew after bon scott died... and i never though van halen was a kool band to begin with. not saying eddie isnt a great guitar player but the band was always lame. but both of these bands like black flag survived on their former glory so that arguement as far as im concerned is nothing.

I've liked Damaged a lot. The other record have good songs but never did that much for me as a whole. I guess a lot of the songs I liked were on that record. But Black Flag is one of the important bands that helped shape punk rock into what it is now, along with all of the others over the years.

idowhatiamtold 06-24-2008 03:48 PM

Definetly the beginning of Rollin's existence and the change of punk rock music forever.

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-15-2008 06:56 PM

Here's Rollins totally pwning a kid accusing him of selling out.

The rest of the interview is great too

Alfred 10-15-2008 07:03 PM

What a suck up that kid was.

sleepy jack 10-15-2008 07:05 PM

bardonodude 10-15-2008 07:45 PM

they're extremely overrated

sleepy jack 10-15-2008 07:50 PM

No they're not, if they were extremely overrated people would finally stop caring about Minor Threat.

bardonodude 10-16-2008 08:59 AM

haha I agree, I mean I respect Black Flag for being DIY and everything and selling out huge halls and **** just by flyers alone and for being one of the first hardcore punk bands, but all of these kids like 17-21 that think they're punk rock still wearing minor threat and black flag t-shirts make me want to laugh in their faces. They're ok, minor threat is a little better imo but the point is, people worship black flag too much just for the fact that other people worship them so much.

Farfisa 10-16-2008 10:01 AM

I have a Black Flag shirt... But I wouldn't say I worship them.

sweet_nothing 10-16-2008 03:08 PM

My cousin has a Black Flag tattoo but he hates Henry Rollins

Queen Boo 04-26-2011 12:44 PM

I feel like I'm the only person who things "Slip it In" is the quintessential Black Flag song. The only one that might be moreso then "Slip it In" is "Depression".

Buzzov*en 04-26-2011 01:39 PM

Slip it in is a great song.

Well thats because he liked Black Flag with Ron Reyes, Des or Keith Morris. Thats a common occurence with Black Flag fans. I prefer Ron Reyes myself.

Six Pack for me i love the simplicity of it and the way it makes me feel. Of the more notable stuff i'd probably say Rise Above is a favorite. Very popular song but i'm not gonna lose any street cred because its a killer riff.

I'm a fan of every singer they have had honestly. Each brought something different to the band.

I always give the First For Years a listen.

BastardofYoung 05-02-2011 05:58 PM

"My War" is essential listening. "Damaged" is also great, but maybe a tad over hyped in many circles, I always prefered "The First Four Years". Ron Reyes is one guy who doesn's seem to get mucg credit, but should. He and Morris are my favorite singers.
