Out of all the nonsensical stuff that has been discussed, I think this is the best quote.

Does it really matter? Punk today has become either very very poppy or a super distorted mess for the most part. So hats off to whoever started this movement that has been exploited by corporate companies to make them more money. lol punk got owned.

punk is a waste of time to argue about.
it was invented by the gypsy's in concentration camps circa 1944, were they would take political jabs at Hitler, and forget about the war. =/

Punk is actually a term rooted in homosexuality, particularly young males giving head to older males in jail.

Better stick to prog rock then innit??
INNIT!!!
Punk actually began when in the year 1132 King Richard the Lion Heart was single handedly fighting an army of hidden snipers shooting arrows from behind snug defences while at the same time trying to seduce the beautiful princess of France which made the French King furious.
"how dare the English King destroy this army and take my daughter for his own" he exclaimed!
He sent news that all french soldiers shall die before surrendering and losing the French King his daughter to the brave English King.
On hearing news of the order Richard heartily exclaimed in amusement "Punckfreed Majesty" which translated from old saxon means "Release my woman" and from then on when any man who tried to stop his daughter from seeing the man she desired who desired her was called a punkfreed which later became shortened to punk to mean a rebel who has no hope of winning.
I hope this has cleared the matter up at last!

New York Dolls existed before McLaren, he latched onto them and Richard Hell. When his career as the Dolls' manager failed and Richard Hell wouldn't be part of his scheme (for reasons that remain unclear to me, though it still makes sense) he formed the Sex Pistols. So, no.

But in the words of Ian Dury: 'There ain't half been some clever bastards' and he recognised the potential of the scene , for good or bad.

Fans in the know do acknowledge the origins of Punk and attribute it to many American bands. Mc Claren bottled it, gave it a name and spawned a sub genre.

We could be pedantic and say that the British invasion in the 60's was a catalyst for the forerunners of Punk but then we would be going around in circles I guess.
