Reading "Straight to Hell" at the top of Screen13's link (and reflecting on the fact that Jackhammer started this thread citing that track) reminds me that I should really have included it on my list, too.
I first heard them play it when I was maybe 14 or 15 when they appeared on Saturday Night Live. It was "punk" enough for me (but somehow "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" was) so, at the time, I didn't like it. Frankly, I didn't like any of their slower songs. Then as my interest in The Clash grew, I was turned off by Combat Rock - totally unfairly, as it turns out. About a year ago, I downloaded Rat Patrol from Fort Bragg and heard the longer version of "Straight to Hell" (I'd never listened to On Broadway) and realized "holy cats, this song is amazing." So, yeah, add "Straight to Hell" to my list. Powerful lyrics, amazing music and one of Strummer's best vocals. |

Such a tough question! They're the band that got me into music in the first place. I spent like a year listening to nothing but the Clash. Anyway, my favorite at the moment is Guns of Brixton. London Calling and Train in Vain are also great. I particularly love the lyrics of Lost In The Supermarket. White Riot and White Man in Hammersmith Palais are also amazing. Ooh, plus Straight to Hell and Stay Free. Ok, I'll stop now before I list every song they ever made.
