so i'll say this Jawbreaker is straight forward three chord punk rock...every now and then they pull out more harmony....but really their major appeal is in their lyrics

All is a group of seasoned musicians "all" of which were in one of the greatest bands ever to come from the LA punk scene of the 80s and by far one of the more unique in the fact that they add musical harmony to their music....All continued this...plus they wrote what is in my opinion one of the greatest punk rock songs ever

i would take Descendent any day over both

Thanks for taking the time to break it down for me, bob! I hear people complain about punk that it is musically too simplistic, so I appreciate what All is trying to do by adding more harmonies.

And now I'm listening to the Descendents' songs on myspace! Descendents definitely sound peppier and happier than Jawbreaker, with more political/social messages in their lyrics (like in 'Merican), and more complicated melodies. And their songs sound much more like popular music (with catchy hooks and a fairly simple verse/chorus structure).

I'm glad you mentioned them. I like comparing the different sounds of these groups, trying to figure out what elements I like the most from each. So far of the Descendents songs I've heard, I like "I'm the one" best, I think, due to the instrumentals. If I could merge the groups, I think I'd take All's instrumentals merged with Descendents' lyrics, merged with more touches of Jawbreaker's somber feeling.

Bannister, I listened to Basilica, Chemistry, and some other Jawbreaker songs off their myspace (Bivouac, Chesterfield King, Accident Prone and others). I felt they play very proficiently, but the songs seemed a little generic to me, not much different from others I've heard in this genre. I wished the guitar parts had more creative solo sections or more playful interplay with the vocal line. Plus, I'm not so fond of the lead singer's voice.

I'm glad you checked 'em out, even though you didn't like them as much as you did All. I like both All and Jawbreaker, but, like bob said, they're pretty different musically. Jawbreaker's guitar begins to all sound the same after a while, even in their more poppy songs.

Also, I didn't like Blake's voice much at first either, but it grew on me after a couple of listens. The lyrics helped a lot, too, so I'm glad you liked some of them. (:

I have never heard anyone describe Jawbreaker as generic before. I can understand the Blake's voice thing a little though. Although it sounds completely different depending on which record you're listening to.

Just found out about forgetters, I had no idea Blake was doing something new. Guess I've been living under a rock.

Anyway I found me a copy, and it sounds good!

Never got to see Jawbreaker, but I did catch a Jets show once, it was absolutely brilliant.

heck ya....that forgetters EP is a great album.....Blake was also in a short lived band called "Thorns Of Life" with Crimpshrine drummer (and famous zinester) Aaron Cometbus and an actress from th L Word....unfortunately they broke up after a few west coast shows and a few shows in nyc....but someone recorded their show at Gilman St. and it's actully a great recording....it's floating around online...but if you can't find it let me know and i'll up my copy

Hey thanks for the heads up. I found the show, I'll check it out.

I'm not too familiar, but from what I've heard "Do You Still Hate Me?" is my favorite. I am a bigger fan of Jets To Brazil though. Played some of their tunes at my wedding :)

They're touring again. News of this was announced in April earlier this year. I was probably asleep in the rain when that happened. Argh. Homelessness. And now the SF show is sold out. Much sad. Anyways, I'm sure there's other fans on the board. Get your tix before they sell out. They're playing Riot Fest in Chicago.
