What was your introduction to punk?
I'm just curious, as to what got people into punk rock originally.
For me, it was this girl who I had met, who introduced me to all this good punk, back when I was another lameass GC fanboy. Anyway, she got me into bands like the Clash and Bad Religion and DK. Unfortunately, it turned out she was a total cunt, and a cutter, so, we parted ways, but I'm still grateful she got me into punk. |
I was into Blink 182 and Green Day a lot, like most of my friends at the time. Most of those guys quickly got into nu metal and stuff like that, but me and 2 other guys started getting more into what we thought was punk at the time. We found out about bands from each other, and it helped that one of those guys had a group of friends who were about 3 years older - and they were really into punk.
Anyway - most of my favorite early punk bands were Offspring, NOFX, Rancid, Operation Ivy, AFI, Bad Religion, Anti Flag, The Ramones etc. We were all into ska-punk as well - I remember the buzz after Streetlight Manifesto released their first album, which was played A LOT back then. Then one day, I was hanging out at one of the older guy's house and he put on California Uber Alles by the Dead Kennedys. I was blown away, and I went out and bought Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, after which DK quickly became my favorite band. From there, we got more into hardcore. I think I was lucky to have such a great group of friends, and we were all really passionate about punk music. The older guys had a band, and I remember their first rehearsal - it was in a kitchen, with a 4 stringed guitar and makeshift drums. It was awful, but excellent at the same time, because of the excitement of us having a band within our group. Good days. I think the first album I bought (except blink albms) was Ribbed by NOFX. |
Being given the God Save The Queen 7" when I was 7 years old
Watching some very young bands play a series of gigs at a local youth club when I was a schoolkid.
Bands with names like; Subterfuge, Red Alert, The Frantic Elevators, V2 and Abdominal Pain. The whole thing just blew me away. |
richard hell
i believe, i found an old cd in my room from like 92 |
The Misfits, The Ramones, and The Sex Pistols.
The Tony Hawk games got me really into it, but before that guitar teachers helped too. |
my mom was in to iggy pop when I was a youngin.
The first time I heard any punk music was probably when I was 11-12ish, playing a Tony Hawk video game. I'd hear songs like They Boy Who Destroyed the World by AFI, and years later I'd hear the song and recognize it, pretty cool feeling.
was at a friends place and he turned on the clash which i got into straight away, just went from there really
my dad introduced me to The Sex Pistols and The Ramones at a young age. I didnt go on a punk pilgrimage myself until of course I was into Blink 182, and Sublime. I got Cheshire Cat and looked at some Kung Fu Records bands like The Vandals and found out about the descendents through sublime. Then I found out about NOFX. Fell in love with them, then I descended into the underground and obscure punk bands of the 80's and early 90's.
When I was like 11 I was victim of the whole Green Day American Idiot ****, which looking back it was pretty sad. Then through my couzin she showed me punk and ska music so I was drawn away from as much emo music.
Now I listen to a lot more punk music, and I'm happy about it. |
my brother is 13 years oldee than me and has been into the punk scene sense he was 14 or so and still is so i was kinda raised around it
655321, that sounds pretty neat. And that reminds me my brother was really into the punk scene, so I guess I grew up around it. Yeah, does your brother give you any of his old stuff? My brother is when he comes back home.
im babysitting his record collection and him and his friends put cds on my comp
First band was THE EXPLOITED around 1987, went through the usual-PISTOLS, RAMONES, THE RUTS, PETER AND THE TEST TUBE BABIES ETC then got into U.K punk U.K Hardcore scene NAPALM DEATH, CEREBRAL FIX, ETREME NOISE TERROR-went to a lot of all day festivals, and got into the American crossover scene-D.R.I,AGNOSTIC FRONT, LUDICHRIST etc. I'm not a fan of most punk these days-GREEN DAY are a pop band to me. CAPDOWN are excellent though and do the odd ska track too.
I listened to a lot of Blink 182 and Sum 41 back when I was like 9 or 10.
People would say they weren't punk at all, (they'd suggest Anti-Flag, lol) so I ventured to find "true punk", hearing a little Ramones in Tony Hawk I thought that was punk but eh, I've always despised the Ramones. The first "true punk" I think I actually listened to was probably The Dead Kennedys at 11 or 12. |
yeah, i'm another one of the morons roped into green day back in 04. i listened to classic rock and commercial **** on the radio before then. i was 11. people told me it wasn't real punk rock, so i kept trying to find out what was. the first independent record i ever bought was Bad Religion's The Empire Strikes First. i haven't really been to any shows since there isn't anything around. i just found out that we have a venue and we had a thrashpunk band. gotta check that **** out. punk's actually been a great impact on my life, especially since i got into right when my parents divorced.
To be honest, I still consider pop-punk to be just as punk as it is pop. So the first punk I heard and enjoyed was either Offspring or Green Day, but the elitist dumb ****s around here would argue against that being punk.
So my first "real" punk I actually fell in love with was Napalm Death (grind is punk, serious) which I get in to through an interest in death metal, which snowballed in to other grind bands, Engorged, Impetigo, Anal ****, and stuff. I then kind of went backwards to find their influences and their influences' influences and so on. So actually if not for Napalm Death I would've never found much punk. |
I saw a programme on BBC2 one night called I Heart '77 and there a 6 or 7 minute segment about the punk music, focussing mainly on the Sex Pistols.

Depends what Offspring you listened to. So I started off listening to my brother's stuff, he used to be a hardcore fan of the Offspring which he still is, but I grew up liking Americana, COO and when it comes to their real punk songs like Jennifer Lost the War. Also alot of AFI, Blink 182 and lots of stuff on Tony Hawks. |
i was introduced to real punk when i was 12 or so i was actually a fan of good charlotte but i saw one of the member wearing like a DK shirt so i got into them even though GC wasnt punk themselves they introduced me to alot of good bands because their own personal tastes are better than the music they make
The newest Good Charlotte album, I had no idea they were so hardcore and edgy ;)
Mine was at a local concert several years ago when a local punk band called Hollywood Hand Grenade played. They have since changed their style to Hardcore but they probably the first good Punk band that I heard.
A blue haired mohawked boy in the summer of 8th grade. He was (and still is for that matter) the drummer in punk band and I was visiting him up in Jersey and went to his band practice, which at the time was them sitting around smoking pot (I was still anti-drugs at the point) and listening to punk music blaring. Anyhow I was all like this **** is sweet and spent the rest of the week just chilling in the guitarists garage listing to punk, getting drunk, and ****ing around, but then had to go back home to my conservative school were practically no one likes good punk and it was sad.
Good Charlotte's new single "the river" is a rip off Alkaline trio and Good riddance. i will admit, when it was put on in the store, i kinda liked the intro, but once the vocals cut in i still kinda liked it, but the lyrics killed it for me. the store manager proceeded to put on two more of their crappy songs. the chorus of one of which was "get your hands off my girl" with some kind of rapping about brand name clothing in between. worst song i've ever heard.
i think MJ wsa being sarcastic
Some random **** I downloaded.
Aw you can't cuss on here?????
try putting spaces in it **** sh it see
Mine, the Spanish punk rock band La Polla Records, The Ramones, and The Clash.. like most people I went from there to a more HC sound.
See the Sex Pistols on the "Bill Grundy Show". It was their 1st appearance on UK tv and there was a public outcry when they swore live on tv. Grundy was sacked and the rest is history. :yikes:
Around 1978 my best friends brother used to lock us in the garden shed and play us stuff by Buzz****s, Blondie and the Pistols. Too young to understand it or appreciate it but it peaked my interest enough to look into it more in the early 80's. Opened up a whole new world of everything from the Cramps and Dead Kennedys to Magazine, Joy Division and the Cure...
I don't know if the Ramones were first or not, but I was probably 15 or 16 when the Sex Pistols showed up in the US. It just sounded like a mess to me, so I didn't really pay all that much attention to it back then. Still don't.
That's not knocking it. It's just not my thing. |
my uncle always had the dead kennedies blasting...and the pistols and ramones..but DK the most probably....this is in the early 80's when i was like really young.
somebody played me "bro hymn" by pennywise and i thought it was amazing
i hate that song now |
My intro to "real" punk were The Clash and Ramones....After hearing I wanna Be Sedated from the Ramones I was instantly hooked I went out and bought 2 albums, I don't regret it. The first Clash album I bought was there Combat Rock album I bought it at a used record shop for $4.
my first listen when i was younger to punk would be dead kennedies and NOFX... thats if you can nofx 'punk' music.
well i used to be into bands like slipknot exct. and before that hip-hip ( :O o no!) but then i met this kid and he showed me a lot of punk bands and lots of different genres, now im getting more and more into the punk culture
THE EXPLOITED in late 80's. Still have a soft spot for them, even though they are not a great punk band.
1992. I was 6 and stumbled upon a cassette of Generator by Bad Religion.
