And I have to say that I enjoyed everything by AFI up to Decemberunderground, which I can't stand. Even Sing the Sorrow wasn't too bad. It certainly was more interesting and creative than their earliest hardcore punk records.

youre probably like the millionth person who has suggested getting rid of genres completely but yeah it doesnt work like that

decemberunderground wasnt a punk album it wasnt even hardcore bands are allowed to make one bad cd in their career afi chose to do that with decemberunderground because that album wasnt good of course some other bands abusive that priviledge and every album they release isnt good

"emo" is its own genre its not a sub-genre of punk

You could think like that but the music bins at record stores say otherwise, not that I agree or disagree

How could emo not be a sub-genre when it's derived from hardcore punk?

It's cool to start controversial topics and all but...

Yeah. What actually IS Emo? The hell if I know.

But with all the fuss from both sides, it's gotta be pretty damn good.

Emotive hardcore. I'd recommend Heroine, Moss Icon, Indian Summer, and Antioch Arrow as places to start.

It's derived from hardcore punk. Pg. 99 always viewed themselves as a punk band as did Rites of Spring.

I don't think we should completely do away with genres, but we shouldn't judge entire genres as good or bad, and automatically judge bands just by their genre. There are good and bad bands in almost every genre. I'm not sure if there are any good country bands, though, but some country inspired punk bands are pretty decent, as was the Vandals country cd.

We'll have to see if AFI's next cd is decent, but many bands (mainstream or not) don't recover after putting out one horrible record. I'll definately give their next cd a chance, just because they've proven that they can write great music.

I don't see why so many people bash decemberunderground and call it their one bad record. Sing the Sorrow sucked too.
