punk isn't dead. Any DIY band I see in DC is what makes punk still sort of breathing. Or maybe it's just a zombie. In any case....if you make it big then yr not punk. Straight up. Punk isn't a sound that appeals to the masses. Punk isn't charging 35 dollars for a show with a barrier between you and and the crowd. You all really don't seem to know terribly too much about what punk really is.

see, I think your definition of punk is too narrow. By a LOT of sh*tty, generic sounding "punk" bands copying the sound of bands like good charlotte, ew found glory (and all the other sh*tty clones like them) haven't made it big, and are calling themselves punk. So, by your logic, they would be punk, even though their lyrics ae bland and unidentifiable, their music is manufactured and predictable, and yet because they're unsucsessful they're punk. that makes no sense whatsoever to me.

No. See those bands are in the mindset of "making it big". They're trying to emmulate popular act. I didn't say every "underground" band was a punk band. Just that mainstream and punk are not the same. Hopefully everyone else got it cos it was pretty clear to me.

It's true, plain punk is pop punk. Ramones, Sex Pistols, Bad Religion, Clash, Rancid, Casualties, all these bands that are considered "punk" just play pop songs with "anti establishment" lyrics.
^ Meh, Ramones were relatively poppy to begin with. And, while I like their music, wasn't what I'd consider punk. The Clash were sort of poppy. The Casualties weren't poppy, just aceholes. And Rancid...never really got into them. But I wouldn't say Bad Religion is pop with anti-establishment lyrics. Particularly not in the beginning.

Pop-punk is not punk, beat yr. own kid is right, it's a complete paradox.
^ We CAN agree, Snickers.

Understandable, but I don't live in D.C.

The only local band I can see being *sigh*, "pop punk", and still maintaining an independent attitude is Common Misconception.

(For all you "pop punk" lovers)
